Gasia wins Bayakoa photo

Gasia won a photo over the stretch-running Brownie Points in the $100,000 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Wednesday. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to Fiery Pursuit in third.

Gasia ($10.80) let the pace horses go in the 1 1/16-mile Bayakoa, as Fiery Pursuit set a pressured pace of 23.60 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, 47.33 for the half-mile mark, and 1:12.25 for six furlongs.

Gasia closed well through the stretch, and won by a head over Brownie Points. Gasia covered the distance over a fast track in 1:45.32.

Two return to dirt, looking down the road to Louisville

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - For You Reppo and Storm in May bring similar storylines into the Grade 2, $1omillion Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. Both are looking to punch their ticket to the Kentucky Derby, and each is returning to conventional dirt following a start on either turf or Polytrack.

For You Reppo has kept good company during his career, and is the lone Arkansas Derby starter with a win at the race's 1 1/8-mile distance. He accomplished that in February, when he won his maiden at Gulfstream Park.

Kaplan down to last of Derby hopefuls

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Bill Kaplan will be on the Kentucky Derby road one last time this weekend, shipping Storm in May from his south Florida base to Oaklawn Park for Saturday's Arkansas Derby.

It wasn't long ago that Kaplan had three Kentucky Derby hopefuls after Storm in May won the Sunshine Millions Dash, Drums of Thunder finished second behind Nobiz Like Shobiz in Gulfstream Park's Holy Bull Stakes, and Imawildandcrazyguy finished second to Notional in the Risen Star at the Fair Grounds. But Drums of Thunder and Imawildandcrazyguy are out of the Derby picture.

Control System out of Comely with illness

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Control System, the undefeated winner of the Grade 3 Cicada Stakes, will be forced to miss Saturday's Grade 2 Comely Stakes at Aqueduct after developing a throat infection, trainer Michael Trombetta said Wednesday.

Trombetta blew out Control System three furlongs in 36.60 seconds Wednesday morning at Laurel Park, but an endosocopic examination following the breeze showed some mucus in her lungs.

Los Alamitos: Gomez has swiftest, Jones has the numbers

Trainer Jaime Gomez saddles the fastest qualifiers to Friday's Grade 1, $205,200 El Primero Del Ano Derby and Saturday's Grade 1, $218,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby, but five-time defending national champion trainer Paul Jones has the numbers, with seven qualifiers in the two 400-yard stakes at Los Alamitos.

The El Primero Derby is for colts and geldings, while the La Primera Derby is the filly counterpart.

Arkansas Derby draw offers lesson for Curlin

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Curlin will break from post 2 in a field of 10 on Saturday at Oaklawn Park in the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby, which drew a surprise entrant in first-time starter Olympic Chief. The draw for the 1 1/8-mile race was held Wednesday.
