Lewis Michael on brink of success

STICKNEY, Ill. - The Wayne Catalano stable has heated up at Hawthorne - and points beyond. Catalano has won with 11 of 29 starters here, and last Saturday had Lewis Michael turn in a strong performance in the Commonwealth Breeders' Cup at Keeneland. But, as has often been the case, Lewis Michael encountered a horse who ran out of his skin, in this case Silent Name, who probably turned in the most impressive Polytrack performance of the Keeneland meet.

"Lewis just ran the best race of his life," said Steve Leving, stable manager for owner Frank Calabrese.

Casse reloads with two in Star Shoot

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mark Casse, last year's Sovereign Award-winning trainer, captured the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks in 2006 with Kimchi, who went on to be voted Canada's champion 3-year-old filly.

The Star Shoot, a six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies, is the first local prep on the road to the June 10 Woodbine Oaks at 1 1/8 miles.

Armstrong going full force this meet

AUBURN, Wash. - Several new outfits will be racing at Emerald Downs this season, but most are not strangers to local fans.

Trainer Janet Armstrong, for example, introduced herself to Washington racing last season when she brought Sophie's Trophy down from Hastings to win the Irish Day Handicap for 3-year-old fillies. She returned with Outrageous Limit, who ran seventh in the Tacoma Handicap, and again with Sophie's Trophy, who finished third in the Washington Oaks.

Armstrong is back in force this year, as she brought her entire stable to Washington.
