Napinowaan can get best of six foes

CALGARY, Alberta – Napinowaan should be favored when he faces six rivals in a third-level allowance sprint in Wednesday’s seventh race here at Stampede Park.

A 4-year-old gelding, Napinowaan just missed in his seasonal bow at this six-furlong distance on April 8 when he finished third, beaten a neck, and is expected to improve off that effort.

Trainer Robertino Diodoro needed to get another work into Napinowaan, an Illinois-bred son of Indian Charlie, and ventured forth last Friday despite the three days of wet snowfall that had the cones up for training each morning.

Keeneland: Audacious Chloe by a neck

In her first start since upsetting champion 2-year-old filly Dreaming of Anna in the Feb. 25 Gaily Gaily at Gulfstream, Audacious Chloe won the $115,700 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland by a neck over Classic Neel.

Audacious Chloe looked like a winner shortly after the start, when several fillies who were expected to show speed did not. This allowed John Velazquez aboard Audacious Chloe to make the front and establish a slow pace under limited early pressure.

Slew's Tizzy closer to Derby run

LEXINGTON, Ky. - In the aftermath of Saturday's Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, trainer Greg Fox played it cool, just as a racetrack veteran of nearly 20 years tends to do. Fox was noncommittal about whether Slew's Tizzy, the Lexington winner at 40-1, would run back in the Kentucky Derby.

"Our philosophy is we don't run horses back in two weeks," said Fox, referring to himself and Joe LaCombe, the owner-breeder of Slew's Tizzy.

As meet opens, revival seems possible

The future looks much brighter for Atlantic City Race Course.

Left for dead several times in the past, Atlantic City opens Wednesday for four days of all-turf racing.

Atlantic City will run Wednesday and Thursday this week and May 2 and 3. Post time is 3 p.m. Eastern.

It's a far cry from the glory days when the track was one of the leaders on East Coast, offering a full summer schedule while attracting grass champions to its lush course for the United Nations Handicap.

Horses give Polytrack a test run

DEL MAR, Calif. - If ever a track seemingly did not need to have something labeled "all weather," it would be Del Mar, which has 43 straight days of fast tracks every summer. Its oft-criticized dirt main track was removed last year, though, following several years of complaints over its safety.
