River Savage surprises at Hollywood

River Savage, whose recent workouts had left trainer A.C. Avila miserable, pulled an upset in Sunday's $107,300 Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park.

River Savage had worked slowly on Hollywood Park's synthetic track twice in late April, and Avila felt he was gambling by starting her in the Grade 3 race. He was delighted to be wrong about the outcome.

Ridden by Omar Berrio, River Savage ($21.20) fought for the lead throughout the 1o1/16 miles and pulled clear in the final sixteenth to win by two lengths over the 6-5 favorite, Cantabria.

Double Action caps off barn's big weekend

ALBANY, Calif. - Although Bwana Bull finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer came home from Kentucky with a Grade 1 victory by Hystericalady, not to mention two new silk ties. He arrived at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday just in time to watch Double Action notch his first stakes victory in the Golden Bear Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Newcomer too good in Mount Royal

CALGARY, Alberta - Calendar Girl, a newcomer from south of the border, capped off a very profitable weekend for trainer Terry Jordan and rider Quincy Welch by capturing the Mount Royal here at Stampede Park on Sunday.

Calendar Girl was much the best in the $50,000 Mount Royal, winning under a hand ride from Welch after engaging Tanika turning for home.

Welch had ventured to Hastings on Saturday to pilot Sovereign Award winner True Metropolitan to victory in the George Royal Handicap for Jordan.

Pforperfectspistol wins battle of divisional champs

Pforperfectspistol ($7) defended his Ohio sprint championship well when he beat two other divisional champions, Cat Singer and Catlaunch in the six-furlong Babst/Palacios Memorial on n closing day at Beulah Park.

Setting all of the pace, Pforperfectspistol, ridden by Scott Spieth for trainer Jeff Radosevich, drifted

out a bit entering the stretch, but had enough left to hold on by a neck over Catlaunch. Cat Singer, last year's handicap champion, ran third.

Star of Whitney now 3 for 3 on grass

Star of Whitney ($7.60) continued her ascent with a demonstrative victory in Saturday's $45,000 Desert Sky Handicap at Turf Paradise.

Owned by John Christensen and trained by Dennis Sowers, the 4-year-old Star of Whitney was sent off the 5-2 favorite in the field of 10 going a mile on the turf. She sat a couple lengths off the pace under Sandi Gann, steadily advanced to the top of the lane, and then blasted clear and held off the hard-charging Evening Escort by 1 1/4 lengths, getting the distance on firm turf in 1:37.47.

Fabulous Strike earns 118 Beyer in comeback

Fabulous Strike ($2.60) picked up where he left off last December, coasting to a 6 1/2-length victory in the $75,000 Panhandle Handicap at Mountaineer.

Making his first start since winning the Christmas Stakes locally last Dec. 26 with a 119 Beyer Speed Figure, the 4-year-old Fabulous Strike had to face only three rivals in the five-furlong Panhandle. Jockey Dana Whitney never asked Fabulous Strike to go all out and he was geared down throughout the stretch, completing the distance in 57.18 seconds.

Unlawful Spirit noses out 'Kellie'

Unlawful Spirit ($26) overtook Kickstand Kellie in the final stride to capture the $50,000 West Virginia Distaff at Charles Town by a nose.

Rain Song, unbeaten in four previous starts locally and 11 for 16 lifetime, set the pace until the sixteenth pole in the 4 1/2-furlong race and finished third as the 1-5 favorite.

A 5-year-old mare ridden by Erick Ramirez for trainer Michelle Francis, Unlawful Spirit was timed in 46.17 seconds.

Jiggs Coz much the best

Jiggs Coz ($7.90) overcame a slow pace and a wide trip to win the $151,200 Queenston Stakes going away at Woodbine.

Jockey David Clark placed Jiggs Coz near the back of a tightly bunched eight-horse field early, as Catsimile set fractions of 23.49 and 46.78 seconds in the seven-furlong race for Ontario-breds.

Jiggs Coz made a four-wide bid into contention on the turn, then overhauled Markdale at the eighth pole en route to a 3 1/4-length victory. After going five wide on the turn, favored Dancer's Bajan wound up three-quarters of a length behind Markdale in third.
