Rabbit sets up Napa perfectly

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Napa ($26.90), with a little help from her stablemate, Sophisticated Star, came from last to win the $55,733 Emerald Downs Stakes at Hastings Racecourse on Sunday.

Trainer Dino Condilenios's strategy of using Sophisticated Star as a rabbit to help set up Napa's good late move in the 6 1/2-furlong feature worked perfectly. Over a track rated sloppy, Sophisticated Star set a fast opening quarter-mile fraction of 22.01 seconds before she tired and finished last.

Coach Jimi Lee prevails

Coach Jimi Lee ($3) had to outfight three challengers in the stretch to prevail by a half-length in the $75,000 Waterford Park Handicap at Mountaineer Racetrack.

The Chicago-based Coach Jimi Lee, making his first start since October, was part of a four-way tussle for the lead turning for home in the six-furlong race. Bernie Blue drew even with Coach Jimi Lee in the upper stretch, but the odds-on favorite dug in under urging by Dana Whitney and drew clear to win in 1:10.22.

Bernie Blue held second, a neck in front of Cognac Kisses.

$850,000 carryover at Hollywood

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There is a two-day pick six carryover of $850,466 for Wednesday's eight-race program at Hollywood Park after bettors failed to hit it on Saturday and Sunday.

The carryover very nearly did not occur. In Sunday's last race, Candygram led into deep stretch before being caught by Warren's Kitten. If Candygram had won the race, one ticket would have been worth $850,466.

Wednesday's pick six covers the third through eighth races. In the pick six, there are four races on the synthetic main track and two on turf.

Prom Shoes finished second by a neck over Fearless Vision. It was 6 1/4 lengths back to Hal's My Hope, who was followed in the order of finish by Sir Whimsey and Soaring By. Vitruvius was scratched after developing a skin rash.

Maizelle rallies back to beat Prop Me Up

With Prop Me Up surging to take the lead about three-sixteenths of a mile from the finish of the Monmouth Beach Stakes, it was hard not to think about her overall career form - 24 starts, 4 wins, and 10 second-place finishes. No sooner had that thought flickered than Maizelle, the pacesetter passed at the quarter pole by a three-wide Prop Me Up, started re-rallying on the fence. And at the wire, it was Prop Me Up in her typical spot, second, with the lightly raced Maizelle running her record to 4 wins from 7 starts, with 3 second-place finishes to go with the victories.
