Asmussen sweeps way to record

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The display of depth and power that trainer Steve Asmussen flaunted throughout the Churchill Downs spring meet came to an apex Saturday when he swept both Gradeo3 stakes for 2-year-olds and set a record for most wins by a trainer at a Churchill meet.

Kodiak Kowboy, ridden by Corey Lanerie, drew off to a 2 3/4-length triumph in the $165,150 Bashford Manor Stakes, an hour after Rated Fiesty easily won the $111,000 Debutante Stakes under Shaun Bridgmohan. Both horses were favored in their respective six-furlong races.

Mach Ride pulls upset in Smile

Mach Ride wins by two lengths in Saturday's $500,000 Smile Sprint.

MIAMI - Take the home-court advantage, add a set of blinkers, and you wind up with Mach Ride's two-length victory over his fellow Calder-based sprinter Paradise Dancer in Saturday's $500,000 Smile Sprint Handicap.

Among the outstanding horses in Mach Ride's wake in the Grade 2 Smile were two of the nation's top-rated sprint sprinters, Smokey Stover and Fabulous Strike, who finished third and fifth in the field of seven older horses.

Dream Rush sails home

ELMONT, N.Y. - The disappointment of last month's Grade 1 Acorn is a distant memory now for the connections of Dream Rush.

On Saturday, Dream Rush became a Grade 1 winner with a solid 2 1/4-length victory over longshot Graeme Six in the $250,000 Prioress before 13,448 on Cooler Bag Giveaway Day at Belmont Park. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to Silver Knockers in third.

Trickey Trevor catches Barber

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Trickey Trevor ($8.60) couldn't keep up with Barber early but wore him down late to win the $50,930 Sam J. Whiting Handicap at the Alameda County Fair on Saturday.

Breaking from the rail, Trickey Trevor was asked to run early by jockey Russell Baze, but Barber had a little more speed. When Barber, the 3-2 favorite, moved to the rail, Baze took Trickey Trevor back to third.

Trickey Trevor swung outside of Barber and The Pharaoh approaching the quarter pole, and he ran down the stubborn Barber to win the six-furlong race by one length in 1:09.79.

English Channel repeats in U.N.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - English Channel continued his love affair with Monmouth Park on Saturday, winning the $750,000 United Nations Stakes for a second straight year with another course-record performance.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, the 5-year-old English Channel ran the 1 3/8 miles on firm turf in 2:12.89, lowering the mark of 2:13.24 he set in last year's renewal. English Channel paid $3.20 to win as the heavy favorite of the crowd of 12,278.

River's Prayer outduels Shaggy Mane

MIAMI - Turf or dirt, it apparently doesn't matter these days to River's Prayer.

After registering her last four victories on grass, River's Prayer returned to the main track to post a half-length decision over 2-1 favorite Shaggy Mane in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder.

Lady of Venice flies home in CashCall

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A small opening helped Lady of Venice make a big impression in Friday’s $1 million CashCall Mile at Hollywood Park.

Stuck behind rivals briefly on the final turn, Lady of Venice was guided through a gap by jockey Julien Leparoux and responded with a tremendous rally to win the Grade 2 race on turf for fillies and mares.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Mystery Classic showed a new dimension Wednesday night when he came from off the pace to win the $50,000 Lone Star Park Sprint. Usually a front-runner, he sat behind three dueling leaders before taking command of the off-the-turf race in the stretch. Eddie Martin Jr. rode the horse in place of regular pilot Bobby Walker Jr.
