Sun Boat flies late in San Diego

DEL MAR, Calif. - Sun Boat, claimed for $50,000 in April, proved his second in the Grade 2 Californian Stakes in June was no fluke when he rallied from last to win Saturday’s $300,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar.

Among Sun Boat’s victims in the Grade 2 San Diego was Buzzards Bay, the winner of the Californian, who could only finish eighth of nine as the 3-2 favorite.

The victory put Sun Boat on course for the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 19, according to trainer Mike Mitchell.

Favored Desert Wheat noses out 80-1 shot

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Desert Wheat closed from last to nip 80-1 shot Lee's Say So by a nose in the $100,000 Shiskabob Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Saturday. The mile and a sixteenth turf race was one of 13 stakes on a card worth $1.3 million. All of the races were restricted to horses bred in Louisiana, with eight for Thoroughbreds and five for Quarter Horses.

Sing Baby Sing wins fourth straight

Sing Baby Sing won his fourth straight race on Saturday, when he came back in the stretch for a half-length victory over Waupaca in the $50,000 Bob Johnson Memorial at Lone Star Park. Waupaca held second, finishing a head in front of third-place finisher Almost Certain.

Sing Baby Sing ($11.20) set the pace in the one-mile turf race, leading the field through an opening quarter in 24.37 seconds, a half-mile in 47.46 and six furlongs in 1:11.11. He lost his advantage to Waupaca in the stretch, then came back and covered the distance over firm turf in 1:34.45.

Red Giant upsets Virginia Derby

Red Giant (3) gets up in time to defeat Strike a Deal by a nose in the American Derby, paying $76.

Todd Pletcher won the $1 million Virginia Derby on Saturday, but not with the colt most horseplayers thought he would.

Red Giant, a 37-1 outsider and one of three Pletcher runners in a field of 10 3-year-olds, was up in the final strides to nail Strike a Deal by a nose at the finish of the Grade 2 Virginia Derby, the showcase race of the Colonial Downs meet in New Kent, Va.

Octave scores in CCA Oaks

ELMONT, N.Y. - Following Octave's victory in last month's Grade 1 Mother Goose, owner Jack Wolf was trying to convince trainer Todd Pletcher to run the 3-year-old filly in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes next month at Saratoga.

After watching Octave win Saturday's Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park, Wolf reiterated his desire to run his filly against Rags to Riches - the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 102 years - in the $600,000 Alabama on Aug. 18.

"Yes we would," said Wolf, whose Starlight Stable owns Octave along with Donald Lucarelli.

Record crowd watches C.R. Charmer win

C.R. Charmer ($8.40) went to the front early and then held a short lead throughout to post her second stakes win this year in Friday's $28,850 Fantango Lady at Horsemen's Park in Omaha, Neb.

The race was for older Nebraska-bred fillies at a mile and served as the feature on the second day of this track's annual four-day summer festival of racing. Track officials estimated Friday evening's crowd at a record 18,000 with many fans missing the first of four races on the card because of a mile-long traffic jam leading to the track.

Bear Holiday by a nose

Bear Holiday ($7.90) nailed 2-5 favorite Dancing Allstar on the wire to take the $125,800 Colin Stakes for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Dancing Allstar, the lone filly in the seven-horse field, established a clear early lead in the six-furlong sprint, and set a rapid pace with Todd Kabel aboard. Bear Holiday raced about six lengths off the lead at the three-eighths pole under Jerry Baird, and commenced a three-wide rally on the turn.

Pay the Man much the best

Pay the Man ($5.80) destroyed a field of Ohio-bred 3-year old fillies by six lengths in the $100,000 Queen City Oaks at River Downs.

"I was surprised they let me go out so slow," jockey Ricardo Feliciano said of Pay the Man's opening quarter in 24.40 seconds. "She was all about her business today. I looked over my shoulder and didn't see anybody coming at the eighth pole. She had a lot left. We saved something for next time."

Pay the Man, trained by Miguel Feliciano, ran 1 1/8 miles on the fast main track in 1:52.40.

Opening-day Schuylerville lures nine

ELMONT, N.Y. - Fresh off his first Belmont trainer's title, Gary Contessa will try to keep the good times rolling at Saratoga when that meet opens on Wednesday. Contessa entered horses in six of the 10 races carded, including I Promise in the Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville Stakes for juvenile fillies.

A field of nine was entered for the Schuylerville, contested at six furlongs. Subtle Aly, an impressive debut winner at Churchill before being sold privately, and According to Plan, a sharp debut winner at Belmont for Barclay Tagg, will likely vie for favoritism.

Off Duty refuses to fold

Off Duty set a swift pace, temporarily surrendered the lead to favored Junior College, then battled back gamely under Larry Melancon to win the the $50,000 Don Bernhardt Memorial Stakes at Ellis Park.

Trained by Lynn Whiting, Off Duty ($8.40) finished 6 1/2 furlongs in a swift 1:15.43 over a fast track. After setting swift fractions while pressed from the outside by Spotsgone, the 4-year-old Off Duty was passed at the quarter pole by Junior College, but he rallied back along the rail to pull clear late.
