Pretty Maid has Ferguson back in the thick of it

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - With 3 wins from 10 starts, trainer Shauna Ferguson is off to a strong start at the meet, and she appears to have a good one on her hands in Pretty Maid. A 3-year-old filly by Western Fame, Pretty Maid upset stakes winners Napa and Chelsey's Image in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race last Saturday. It was just her second start this year, and as well as facing winners for the first time, Pretty Maid had her first try going around three turns.

Pick six carryover now $179K

ELMONT, N.Y. - For the second straight day, there were no winning tickets in the pick six at Belmont Park, making for a carryover of $179,417 heading into Friday's card. First post Friday is 3 p.m., the first of six sunset racing cards to be held on Friday's for the remainder of the meet.

There was a $47,566 carryover entering Thursday's card and many tickets were eliminated when Snuff Box went gate to wire in the first leg, returning $38.40. Other winners included Bon Marie ($14.40), Debbie Got Even ($11.60), and Panicking Petunia ($48.80).

Fund established for injured rider Lakeman

The Backstretch Employee Service Team (BEST) has established the Andrew Lakeman Assistance Fund to benefit the jockey who was seriously injured in a spill at Belmont Park on May 25. All proceeds from the fund will be used to offset Lakeman's medical expenses and ongoing care.

Kuntzweiler pleads guilty

Former jockey Greta Kuntzweiler agreed to a 10-year prison sentence when pleading guilty Tuesday to drug charges in Jefferson Circuit Court in Louisville, Ky., with formal sentencing set for Aug. 3.

Monmouth BC expected to sell out

Breeders' Cup Saturday at Monmouth Park is headed for a sellout, based on the mail and on-line applications received by the June 6 deadline for the random-selection seat lottery.

"We felt the response was great," said Bill Knauf, Monmouth's vice president of marketing operations. "It looks like we are oversubscribed for the tickets allotted."

More than 4,600 online orders were received. Approximately 1,100 more arrived by mail for the 15,000 seats available for public sale. Each order application was limited to four tickets.

Park Avenue Ball has throat surgery

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Park Avenue Ball, the most successful active New Jersey-bred, will miss most of the summer while recuperating from throat surgery.

The procedure was performed June 5 at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. The

5-year-old returned to trainer Jim Ryerson's Monmouth Park barn earlier this week.

A breathing problem was detected after Park Avenue Ball ran sixth last time out, in his turf debut in Monmouth's Elkwood Stakes on May. 26.

"The surgery could help him for the races in the fall," Ryerson said.

Miss Missile targets Debutante despite loss

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Lone Star Park track-record-holder Miss Missile suffered her first career defeat Saturday when a troubled fourth in the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, but the loss will not change long-held plans to test her in graded stakes company.

Charlie Smith, who owns and trains Miss Missile, said she is scheduled to start next in the Grade 3, $100,000 Debutante at Churchill Downs on Julyo7.

Time to Get Even suddenly has suitors

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Over a span of seven weeks, in consecutive starts, Time to Get Even went from winning a maiden race to his first graded stakes win. The sudden rise of the 3-year-old has left trainer Walther Solis and the partnership that owns the colt in an enviable position.

Solis says the phone rings occasionally with offers to buy Time to Get Even, who cost a grand total of $5,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale. Solis insists that Murrietta Racing Stable and its partners and are not interested in selling.

Track still buzzing

This track is still abuzz about Chad Johnson's appearance here last weekend. Johnson raced the Thoroughbred Restore the Roar, and won by 12 lengths. After the race, Johnson talked about taking on Floyd Mayweather in boxing, Lebron James in basketball, and Jeff Gordon in an automobile race. Johnson donated his time to the charity fundraiser and did not charge an appearance fee. An estimated crowd of more than 8,000 people turned out to watch the event, promoted as "Man vs. Beast."

New sale to offer at least horses

The catalog for the inaugural Oklahoma City Summer Thoroughbred yearling sale on Aug.18 is expected to number between 50 and 60 horses, said sales manager Terri Carter. Consignments closed last Friday, with catalogs due out July 10.

The sale will be held at a new, state-of-the-art sales pavilion at the state fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, about 10 minutes from Remington Park.

The sale will begin at 11 a.m. Central.
