Citronnade added to mix

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Citronnade will be in a familiar spot Sunday at Hollywood Park - loose on the lead as the odds-on favorite - while seeking her fifth consecutive win.

Bobby Frankel had been noncommittal about Citronnade, who won the Grade 1 Gamely on May 28 and whose summer goal is the Beverly D. at Arlington on Aug. 11. But after watching Citronnade train, and eyeballing the modest field for the Gradeo2 Beverly Hills Handicap on Sunday, Frankel on Tuesday said Citronnade was a go for the $150,000 race at 1 1/4 miles on grass.

Shampoo maintains focus

AUBURN, Wash. - The nine 3-year-old fillies who lined up for Sunday's one-mile Irish Day Handicap had plenty of reasons to be rattled.

Most members of the field were lightly raced, and all but two were starting in front of the grandstand for the first time. Add to that a deluge of biblical proportions that struck during the post parade and a lengthy delay that followed the late scratch of Wings of Justice, who acted up in the gate, and the stage was set for further mayhem.

Fearless Eagle surprises even Plesa

MIAMI - No trainer had a better day up and down the East Coast on Saturday than Eddie Plesa Jr., who sent out Gottcha Gold to upset Lawyer Ron in Monmouth Park's Grade 3 Salvator Mile and the 45-1 shot Fearless Eagle to an even bigger shocker victory in the Lord Juban Stakes at Calder.

Fearless Eagle had only four previous starts, none on grass, before rallying to defeat fellow longshots Sparkling Notion in second place and Unbridled Music in third in the Lord Juban at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

The Tin Man a go for American Cap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Richard Mandella tried to talk himself out of starting The Tin Man in Saturday's $250,000 American Handicap at Hollywood Park. But after noting the attitude the 9-year-old gelding has displayed in recent training, Mandella gave in.

"It would be a waste of time not to run him," Mandella said on Sunday.

Attard coping with a weekend of tough breaks

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Queen's Plate weekend was a particularly draining experience for trainer Kevin Attard and the family of the late Steve Stavro, who had entered both Leonnatus Anteas and Alezzandro in Sunday's $1 million showpiece at Woodbine.

Leonnatus Anteas, the stable's more fancied Queen's Plate candidate, wound up spending Plate Day at the nearby University of Guelph's veterinary clinic after developing an infected pastern.
