Tagg again discovers another dimension

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - For the second straight year, trainer Barclay Tagg has a top-class 3-year-old who performed well on dirt but may have his future on grass. His newest model is Nobiz Like Shobiz, who captured the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes on Monday at Saratoga in his turf debut. As with last year's model, Showing Up, Tagg said Nobiz Like Shobiz may point for the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park as his main, late year objective.

Barn area full as 10-day meet opens

FERNDALE, Calif. - Humboldt County Fair racing secretary Ella Robinson has a pleasant problem on her hands as the 111th race meeting at the tiny track opens Thursday. The barn area is so overfilled that portable stalls have had to be brought in for the 10-day meet that runs through Aug. 19.

"It looks very promising," she said. "We have some new trainers coming up, and the usual suspects have more than they usually bring."

Defending training champion Karen Haverty will have a full barn. Haverty had 6 wins, 8 seconds, and 9 thirds from 37 starters last year.

Longacres Mile has solid cast, but few Breeders' Cup hopefuls

AUBURN, Wash. - The list of 27 nominees for the Aug. 19 running of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile was released on Monday, and there is no question it is a star-studded roster. There are seven graded stakes winners on the list, including Grade 1 winner Buzzards Bay and True Metropolitan, Canada's top handicap horse of 2006.

Winning races, losing horses

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Cody Autrey brought 16 horses to Del Mar from Texas for the first time last month.

At the pace his barn is shrinking via claims by rival trainers, it seems that Autrey may be down to little more than feed buckets and webbings by the end of the meeting on Sept. 5.

Through Sunday, Autrey, 27, has had nine horses claimed from him for a combined price of $264,000. He reacted by replenishing his stable with additional horses from his Texas and Oklahoma divisions, boosting the stable back to 15.

Rainford done for the season after pair of concussions

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - A season that began in a blaze of promise for apprentice jockey Michelle Rainford has come to an abrupt end.

Rainford, 27, rode 95 winners last year in her first full campaign, including 10 during the final week of the meeting, to rank ninth in the standings here at Woodbine.

She already had 25 winners under her belt at this meeting, but, although she would not know it for six weeks, her season was effectively over after she was involved in a three-horse spill in the ninth race on June 21.

Minimum stakes purse rises to $60K

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows will offer 10 stakes races worth $775,000 during its fall meet, boosting the minimum payout to $60,000 from the $50,000 offered during the spring meet.

"A lot of our overnight stakes need help from Southern California," racing secretary Tom Doutrich said. "With Turf Paradise now offering $40,000, we worked with the Thoroughbred Owners of California and reached an agreement to raise our purses in hopes of attracting horses here. When you figure in the Cal-bred bonus, those stakes have a $78,000 purse."

Gonzalez holds a 69-68 advantage heading into the new week despite taking off his mounts Sunday after a frightening incident in the walking ring before Saturday's eighth race.

Firmer U.S. turf may suit Danak

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - There was the usual mid-Million-Week mild chaos around Arlington Park's quarantine barn Tuesday morning, as the group of foreign horses that arrived Sunday night waited to clear quarantine restrictions that kept them from training among the regular equine population. The call from the U.S. Department of Agriculture came in not long past 8 a.m., and by 9, the Sunday arrivals had gotten their first look at the Arlington racetrack.

Assiniboia: Weather Warning stuns

Weather Warning ($71), one of three horses in the race trained by Martin Drexler and owned by Stuart Hyman, led at every call for a shocking victory in Monday's $100,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby at Assiniboia Downs.

Weather Warning, making his local debut and his first start for his new connections, cut out fractions of 23 seconds, 46.80, and 1:12 en route to a four-length victory in 1:52 for 1 1/8 miles.

"Once I hit the half-mile, I knew how much horse I had, and I thought I had a really good shot at winning," said winning jockey Paul Leacock.
