Street Sense pressed for hard work

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - In what figures to be his most serious move between now and the $1 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 25, Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense worked five furlongs in 59.68 seconds Wednesday morning over Saratoga's main track.

With regular rider Calvin Borel in the irons, Street Sense worked in fractions of 24.57 and 36.40 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.24. Unlike many of Street Sense's previous works, in which Borel hardly asked Street Sense to run, Borel got busy with a vigorous hand ride in the stretch of Wednesday's drill.

Mitchell following classic strategy

DEL MAR, Calif. - First it was San Juan Capistrano winner On the Acorn, and now comes Big Booster and Sun Boat. Three times this year, trainer Mike Mitchell has developed former claimers into stakes-class runners and, in two of the cases, graded stakes winners.

For Big Booster and Sun Boat, much of the improvement may have been because of their fondness for synthetic surfaces that are now carpeting Southern California. But in all three instances, their improvement also coincided with being gelded.

Both run Sunday in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

Taylor's Route more potential than proven

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Pete Gregory won the B.C. Derby two years in a row with Ever Steady in 1991 and Bolulight in 1992, and he is hoping that a horse he recently brought to Hastings, Taylor's Route, is good enough to win the track's most prestigious race.

Raise the Bluff draws 8, Trickey Trevor 12

AUBURN, Wash. - Co-highweights Raise the Bluff and Trickey Trevor drew posts 8 and 12, respectively, at Wednesday's draw for Sunday's 72nd running of the Grade 3, $400,000 Longacres Mile.

Raise the Bluff and Trickey Trevor will each carry 119 pounds, but a better draw may tilt favoritism toward Raise the Bluff. Trainer Junior Coffey, a former professional football player, was hoping to draw one of the digits of his jersey number, 34, but he said his horse will probably not be hurt by post 8.

More Happy scores for Baffert

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - If things keep going like this, trainer Bob Baffert may have to do some house hunting on the East Coast.

The California-based Baffert made it 2 for 2 at Saratoga on Wednesday as More Happy, under Rafael Bejarano, led every step of the way in winning the Grade 2, $150,000 Adirondack Stakes for juvenile fillies by three-quarters of a length over A to the Croft. It was three-quarters of a length back to Passion in third.

Fleet Caroline faster - and meaner

DEL MAR, Calif. - Fleet Caroline has changed drastically for trainer Vladimir Cerin in recent months. Once a maiden claimer, she now belongs in graded stakes. Once a well-mannered filly, Fleet Caroline is . . . well, ornery, to say the least.

"She's an absolute witch," Cerin said. "She's kicking the walls and trying to jump over the webbing."

Cerin and the partnership that owns the 3-year-old filly are hoping that Fleet Caroline's attitude will translate to a successful race in the $400,000 Del Mar Oaks on Saturday.

Full field for Prelude, with no standout

BOSSIER CITY, La. - A deep group of 12 3-year-olds passed the entry box Wednesday for Saturday's $100,000 Prelude Stakes at Louisiana Downs. In addition to the winner's share of the purse money, the spoils also include an automatic berth in next month's Super Derby.
