Paralyzed rider pays visit to Spa

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Andrew Lakeman, the jockey who was paralyzed from the chest down in a spill at Belmont Park in May, says he hopes to one day walk again and his ultimate dream is to train horses. Lakeman, 32, was a visitor to Saratoga on Saturday, where one of the horses he routinely galloped for trainer Allen Jerkens, Political Force, was to run in the Grade 1 Woodward.

Mott takes first Spa title since 2001

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - What Bill Mott thought was fantasy early in the meet became reality on Saturday as he officially clinched the Saratoga trainers' title.

Mott won his 22nd race of the meet when Saada, a 2-year-old son of Thunder Gulch, captured a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race. It was the ninth 2-year-old maiden win of the meet for Mott, who had always been overlooked for his work with young horses.

Tensas Yucatan wins Raspberry Stakes

Tensas Yucatan turned back a bid from 6-5 favorite and previously unbeaten Ahead of Her Time to capture the $75,000 Elge Raspberry Stakes on Friday afternoon at Louisiana Downs. Louisiana Song finished third followed by Silver Mitten.

The winner, trained by Morris Nicks, reversed the outcome of the Louisiana Breeders' Oaks on the main track here in July when Ahead of Her Time proved narrowly best following a lengthy stretch drive.

Nownownow's time arrives on turf

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Nownownow, a loser of all three of his starts on dirt, found a new lease on life on the turf, rolling to a three-length victory in Friday's $83,250 With Anticipation/P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga.

The filly Zee Zee rallied to get second by a nose over entrymate Sherine, another filly, who had made all the early pace. This turf race for juveniles featured four fillies and five colts and geldings among its nine starters.

Harwood not worried about Smarty Deb

AUBURN, Wash. - Smarty Deb, the probable favorite for Sunday's $100,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, will be stretching out to a mile for the first time after six weeks without a race. That might be cause for concern for some, but not for trainer Doris Harwood.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Financingavailable's photo graced the cover of the catalog for the local Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's yearling sales, which will be held this coming Tuesday and next Saturday at the Woodbine sales pavilion.

But, Financingavailable herself will not grace the field for the Algoma, the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares that is one of six $125,000 yearling sales stakes on the holiday Monday program.

Godolphin buys Accountforthegold

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sheikh Mohammed is getting with the program.

Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin Racing purchased the Grade 3 stakes-winning New York-bred Accountforthegold from Steve Sigler's Winning Move Stable and Harold Lerner. Accountforthegold was expected to arrive in Kentucky from Saratoga on Saturday, and later in the year he will ship to Dubai to prepare for that country's International Racing Carnival that begins in January. The highlight of the carnival is the Dubai World Cup card in late March.

Giliforte and Ross try Presque Isle

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Fort Erie trainers are known to ship south of the border now and then, with Finger Lakes in New York and Thistledown in Cleveland being their usual destinations.

But a new kid on the block - Presque Isle Downs in Erie, Pa. - was scheduled to open on Saturday for a September meet and a couple of local trainers are looking to share in some of the hefty purses offered there.

Layne Giliforte and Brian Ross both had runners entered for Saturday's opening-day card.

Two fillies seek return to past glory

DEL MAR, Calif. – Both Runway Rosie and Romance Is Diane will be seeking to return to their former glory when they compete in a wide-open version of the $125,000 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Sunday at Del Mar. Neither filly has won a race this year, yet both have run well against far better company than they will be facing going a mile on Polytrack on Sunday.
