Asi Siempre kept out of Matron

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Six horses were entered Wednesday in Saturday's Grade 3 Arlington Matron, but there's a hole in the field about the size of Texas.

Asi Siempre, who would have been a prohibitive favorite to win the Matron, will instead spend Saturday afternoon at home in her stall at Keeneland. Asi Siempre turned in a fast five-furlong workout on Tuesday over Keeneland's Polytrack, but that afternoon she was found to have a bruised foot. The injury isn't serious, but will cost her several days of training - if not a week - and a start in the $150,000 Matron.

New schedule seen as business boon

Retama Park near San Antonio will start its 32-date Thoroughbred meet about a month later than usual on Friday night, a change that will move its most noted stakes races, the $100,000 El Joven and $100,000 La Senorita, to October. The track will race through Nov. 17.

The later start should be good for business on several fronts, according to Bryan Brown, chief executive officer of Retama.

Big weekend for Birzer

All horse players look for an edge, and this past Labor Day weekend at Prairie Meadows that edge came in the form of jockey Alex Birzer. After beginning the racing weekend tied for second in the rider standings, Birzer went on a tear, winning 13 of the 24 Thoroughbred races offered.

The highlight of his weekend came Sunday when he won the first five races on the card. Birzer's unforgettable weekend saw him take the lead in the jockey standings, opening up a four-win cushion with only six days remaining in the meet.
