Meet opens amid optimism over gaming

The brand of racing is the same. The ontrack promotions are the same. Pretty much everything about Turfway Park is the same as when the fall meet ended Oct. 4 at the Florence, Ky., track.

Attfield taking final shot with pair of fillies

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Roger Attfield soon will be making his annual pilgrimage to Payson Park, where he will enjoy some Florida sunshine while training a string of 35 horses and sending out the odd starter at Gulfstream Park.

But in the meantime, the Attfield stable has some unfinished business locally, including a pair of entrants for Sunday's Bessarabian Stakes.

Sudsy Baby and Quelle Beaute, both 4-year-old Florida-breds, will represent Attfield in the $150,000 Bessarabian, a seven-furlong race for fillies and mares.

Back to normal, with slots on board

NEW ORLEANS - The fans managed to find their way in, gray skies cleared in mid-afternoon, and opening day of the 2007-08 Fair Grounds meet passed with flying colors.

This opener didn't buzz like last year, when New Orleans - a city rich in racing tradition - welcomed the track back after a year's absence. Following the destruction caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Fair Grounds was forced to move its meet two seasons ago to Louisiana Downs.

Vella puts new rider, blinkers on Cool Gator

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Cool Gator is coming off back-to-back second-place finishes in $250,000 races, having been beaten a head in the 1 1/16-mile Grey and 1 1/4 lengths in the 1o1/8-mile Coronation Futurity.

On Saturday, Cool Gator will be looking to close the deal in the $125,000 Display, a 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

"Certainly it was an artificial pace last time, which hurt all the horses coming from behind," said Vella of the Coronation Futurity. "On top of that, I think he ran a little immature. He does have trouble with his attention."

Many questions for Worldy's return

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The $500,000 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park on Sunday will test Worldly in several ways.

Is he back to the form that led to two graded stakes wins during the spring? Can he be as effective over 1 1/4 miles on turf as he was over shorter distances? Has he fully recovered from a throat ulcer diagnosed after a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on Sept. 2?
