Horse Greeley to return in Malibu

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Horse Greeley, whose career has been plagued by injuries since a win in the Grade 2 Del Mar Futurity in 2006, will make his second comeback of 2007 in the $250,000 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on Wednesday.

Trained by Richard Mandella for Ray and Martha Parfet, Horse Greeley has had as many injuries as he has had starts since the Del Mar Futurity. Following a seventh-place finish in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita in October 2006, Horse Greeley was found to have a bone chip in a left ankle.

Santa Anita may reopen for training Saturday

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita officials on Thursday were hopeful that training on the main track could resume Saturday for the first time since Dec. 5, but some Santa Anita-based trainers said the absence of main-track training for more than two weeks has left some of their horses behind schedule. That may have an effect on entries during the first few days of the winter-spring meeting that begins on Wednesday.

Ask the Moon gets first shot against statebreds

Ask the Moon, perfect in two starts at a flat mile, appears well spotted to secure her first stakes victory in Saturday's $50,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel Park.

Based at Philadelphia Park with trainer Ned Allard, Ask the Moon will be dropping from open company to face Maryland-breds for the first time. A $125,000 purchase at the OBS sale of 2-year-olds last March, Ask the Moon won her maiden by 10 1/4 lengths in a one-turn mile at Laurel in August and most recently defeated first-level allowance runners in a two-turn mile at Philly Park.

Rain keeps Santa Anita track closed

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita's Cushion Track surface, which has been closed to training since Dec. 5, was hit by more than an inch of rain overnight on Tuesday and did not drain sufficiently to allow horses to resume training on Wednesday, as track officials had hoped.

Training has been postponed until at least Friday or Saturday, following the completion of additional maintenance procedures, track officials said. The winter-spring meeting starts on Wednesday.

Philly casino plan approved

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Tuesday granted Philadelphia Park Casino and Racetrack a permanent license to operate slot machines and approved the track's plan for a new slot-machine facility.

Philadelphia Park's temporary slots license was set to expire on Wednesday. The track has been operating 2,100 slot machines on the first four floors of the grandstand, but the new casino will be located at a stand-alone site elsewhere on the property, according to the plans approved by the board. Construction is scheduled to be completed by November 2009.

Futurity showtime for Massive Drama

Massive Drama will get tested for distance in Saturday's CashCall Futurity.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Massive Drama appeared to be toying with his 10 rivals in the final furlong of the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes at Hollywood Park on Thanksgiving, winning by 1 3/4 lengths.

There will be no time for clowning around by Massive Drama in Saturday's $750,000 CashCall Futurity.

The Grade 1 race will be Massive Drama's first start at 1 1/16 miles - and a chance for the colt to stake a position at the top of California's 3-year-old male division for 2008.

So far, the undefeated Massive Drama has exceeded trainer Bob Baffert's early opinions.

Aiming high with Johnny Eves

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - For a few weeks this fall, Johnny Eves was the track-record holder at 6 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park after he won an allowance race in 1:14.03 on Nov. 25, for the fourth win of his nine-race career.

It was a short-lived reign. The current mark of 1:13.79 was set by the maiden Banner Lodge last weekend.

That is okay with trainer Jay Robbins. He is hoping that Johnny Eves can reach an even bigger milestone in the $250,000 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on Wednesday, opening day of that track's winter-spring meeting.

Mystery Classic out to make amends in Bonapaw

The trainer Bob Schultz prefers not to weave a complex web of excuses for Mystery Classic's fifth-place finish in the 2006 Bonapaw Stakes at Fair Grounds.

"We came over and got our butts kicked," Schultz said.

And that never happens to Mystery Classic. Among the best Texas-breds going, Mystery Classic has won a remarkable 12 of 17 career starts, and has finished worse than third in only one race besides the Bonapaw. On Saturday, he will try to avenge his loss last year in the $100,000 race, one of four sprint stakes on the Fair Grounds card.
