High Resolve eyes Sunshine Millions Oaks

High Resolve had no trouble staying unbeaten and basically untested in four career starts when she won the $45,000 Arizona Juvenile Fillies at Turf Paradise on Dec. 29. Owned by Harry Aleo and trained by Greg Gilchrist, the Northern California-based filly will try the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks at Gulfstream Park in her next start, on Jan. 26. The Sunshine Millions is an eight-race program pitting California-breds against Florida-breds, and is run concurrently at Gulfstream and Santa Anita.

Memorial service set for Baird

Dale Baird may be gone, but he's not forgotten.

Friends and colleagues of Thoroughbred racing's all-time leading trainer, who died when he was thrown from his truck in an accident along Interstate 70 near Greenfield, Ind., on Dec. 23, will gather at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort on Monday.

Lone Star building new offices

Lone Star Park is constructing a new racing administration building on its backstretch. The project cost is $1.4 million, with $500,000 of that amount funded by the city of Grand Prairie. The building is scheduled to be occupied before the start of the Thoroughbred season April 10.

Quarter Horse meet begins

Louisiana Downs will begin a Quarter Horse meet Saturday with the $25,000 Harrah's Dash and trial races for the Grade 2, $150,000-added Harrah's Derby. The 40-date meet will run through March 18.

Beulah speed bias removed

The Beulah Park racing surface received a facelift of sorts during the two-week break between fall and winter racing. The inside speed bias that was apparent late in the fall meet, when the four inside horses and any horse with early speed that could get to the rail had to be considered in exotic wagers, appears to be gone. Quick times - six furlongs were routinely run in the 1:09 to 1:10 range last fall - are also gone. After the first two days of the winter meet, the fastest six-furlong time has been 1:15.03. Two maiden claiming races have gone in times over 1:18.

Workers use machinery to move parts of the waterlogged Cushion Track surface at Santa Anita.

Stakes shuffle raises questions

ARCADIA, Calif. - The wet-weather failure of Cushion Track at Santa Anita will create handicapping uncertainty when the graded stakes schedule resumes this weekend.

Four graded stakes were scrapped when racing was canceled Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. All four are rescheduled for the coming weekend, and evaluating the current form of the principals is now a lot more difficult.

Lecomte coming up strong

Churchill Downs Inc.'s blockbuster-stakes-day concept has some chops, at least from the look of Saturday's card at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. While no superstars - not yet, at least - appear on the program, the six $100,000 stakes races on the card drew competitive fields with plenty of quality for their respective class levels.
