Shampoo geared up for return to races

AUBURN, Wash. - Shampoo, who was among the brightest stars at Emerald Downs last season, is slated to make her 4-year-old debut in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance dash Sunday. Will she be ready to shine her brightest at first asking?

"That would be asking a lot," trainer Doris Harwood said. "Five and a half furlongs is really too short for her, so we're not expecting a whole lot this time. We'll be happy if she finishes well and comes out of the race well. That would set her up for the Hastings Park Handicap on May 18, which is what we are looking to do."

Out-of-town stakes keep Lynch busy

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Brian Lynch, back in town following a solid Gulfstream Park meeting for Stronach Stable, still has some unfinished business south of the border.

Saturday, Lynch will be back in Florida to saddle Ginger Brew for the $200,000 Calder Oaks, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies.

Ginger Brew started three times at Gulfstream, finishing second twice before winning a first-level turf allowance at 1 1/16 miles by four lengths.

Diamond Diva's best yet to come

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Diamond Diva has won one-mile turf stakes in her first two starts in this country and has yet to play to her strength, trainer Jim Cassidy said.

"She's not a miler," he said.

Could have fooled everyone. Diamond Diva won her U.S. debut in the American Beauty Handicap at Santa Anita on March 30, and followed with a sharp win in Wednesday's $110,800 Wilshire Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Communique runs down Tejida

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Communique took 10 starts to win a first-level allowance race following her maiden win, but she was able to move forward off that April 4 victory and close a brilliant month at Keeneland with a late-running victory before 11,673 fans in the Grade 3, $150,000 Bewitch Stakes on Thursday.

Jockey Garrett Gomez was able to save ground on the final turn with Communique ($10.80), then picked his way through traffic and ran down favored Tejida, who led for all but the final 50 yards of the 1 1/2-mile grass race for older fillies and mares.

Barbette should be flying in stretch

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Monterey Jazz should start as a strong favorite in the Grade 3, $300,000 Texas Mile at Lone Star Park on Saturday, but determining favorites for the three undercard stakes supporting that race will take some nose-to-the-grindstone effort.

The Irving Distaff, Grand Prairie Turf Challenge, and the Richland Hills Farm Stakes all drew full, competitive fields. Each race is worth $50,000, and serves as a prep for one of the six divisional stakes to be run on the Lone Star Million Day program here May 26.

Woodbine jockey enters guilty plea

Woodbine-based jockey David Clark has pleaded guilty to charges of impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm, according to a news release issued Thursday by the York Regional Police in Ontario.

Clark's appearance in a Newmarket, Ontario, courtroom on Wednesday stemmed from a May 16, 2006, accident in which a 34-year-old schoolteacher in another vehicle was fatally injured.

Clark had also faced charges of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm, and driving with an excessive amount of alcohol in his blood. Those counts were dropped.

New meet offers fans new look

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Signs posted at some of the entrances to Hastings read, "Yes, we are open." They are necessary because the track is undergoing renovations to install 600 slot machines and a new entertainment area and the site looks more like a construction zone than a race track. New walls seem to spring up out of nowhere on a daily basis, and it isn't easy navigating your way around the facility, even if you know it well.

Philadelphia Park trainer's ban is upheld

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has upheld revocation of the license of Jayne Vaders, the leading trainer at Philadelphia Park last year, because of multiple drug violations.

A spokesman for the commission, Chris Ryder, said that the board upheld a stewards' ruling from last May to revoke the license, citing seven medication violations over the past several years at the track. Ryder said that stewards are empowered to revoke a license under Pennsylvania rules if a trainer has two or more medications violations in one year.
