Not Bourbon answers questions in prep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sunday's Plate Trial was a true trial for Not Bourbon, whose ability to handle the 1 1/8-mile distance was the subject of much speculation.

"The Trial had to tell me something," said Roger Attfield, who trains Not Bourbon and had elected to bypass the 1 1/16-mile Marine here May 17 after Not Bourbon romped in the seven-furlong Queenston two weeks earlier. "He'd never been two turns and a big effort in the Marine, plus a big effort in the Trial, would have been too much to get to the Plate."

Smooth Air pulls away in Ohio Derby

Septuagenarian trainer Bennie Stutts has been saying for weeks how much it meant to him to just have his first-ever starter in the Kentucky Derby. Yes, Smooth Air finished 11th in the race, but Stutts has been around the racetrack forever, training few horses to be mentioned in the same breath with "Kentucky Derby."

But it turns out Smooth Air's run in the first leg of the Triple Crown had a more pedestrian purpose: It set him up perfectly to win the Ohio Derby on Saturday at Thistledown.
