Colonial Turf Cup draws 10

The Grade 3, $600,000 Colonial Turf Cup at Colonial Downs in Virginia on Saturday attracted a field of 10 3-year-olds when it was drawn on Monday, including Court Vision, the winner of two graded stakes as a 2-year-old last year.

The Colonial Turf Cup is the first leg of a four-race series worth $5 million in purses and bonuses to any horse who can win all four races. The others are the July 19 Virginia Derby at Colonial, the Aug. 9 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park, and the Oct. 5 Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park. Colonial Downs sponsors the bonus.

Churchill fined $15K

The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority has fined Churchill Downs Inc. $15,000 in an agreement reached between the two parties regarding Churchill's decision to hire an assistant starter specifically to handle one horse, Pyro, in the Kentucky Derby, the racing authority said Monday after a meeting.

Pitts liked Einstein's Foster finish

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Helen Pitts said she was proud of the effort that Einstein gave Saturday in the Stephen Foster Handicap when the horse got up in the final stride to get second from Barcola.

Pitts, the former trainer of the Foster winner, Curlin, said she believed Einstein "maybe could've finished even closer if the pace hadn't been so slow," referring to fractions of 25.01 seconds, 49.28, and 1:13.41, "but I think we were going to be second, regardless."

Charles Town: Shesdebonairess returns for a win

Shesdebonairess ($8), returning to Charles Town for the first time since winning back-to-back races in late December and early February, led wire to wire over a sloppy, sealed track to win the $50,000 Its Binn Too Long Stakes for 3-year-old West Virginia-bred fillies by 1 1/2 lengths.

My Hobby set all the pace for a one-length victory over Dazzling Seville in the My Hobby ($10), ridden by Larren Delorme, covered the mile in 1:40 flat over a fast track.

Dazzling Seville checked in second, with Plaer's Trump another 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

Canterbury: Lemonlime on top

Lemonlime bested 11 rivals to capture the $50,000 Minnesota HBPA Mile Stakes at Canterbury Park.

Lemonlime, the 5-2 favorite, defeated Inhonorofjohnnie by 1 1/4 lengths. Angel Smoke was third, missing second by a nose. Lemonlime ($7.60) completed the mile over firm turf in 1:37.56.

Prairie Meadows: Beyond the Reach by two

Beyond the Reach pulled away through the stretch to win the $70,000 Hawkeye Handicap at Prairie Meadows by two lengths, with Thekatcamehome nipping Camela Carson for second. Beyond the Reach ($10.60) covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.02.

In the $70,000 Cyclone Handicap, Red Hot and Gold ($3.40) took the lead midway through the turn and cruised to a 3 3/4-length win, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.87.

Golden Gate: Bonfante rallies to win

Bonfante ($10.80) sat well off an early speed duel and pulled away from the dueling leaders to win his third straight Northern California stakes race, the Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

Ridden by Frank Alvarado, Bonfante rallied three wide on the turn and stayed wide as he shifted into passing gear to go in front. Black Seventeen was second, 1 1/2 lengths behind Bonfante, who covered six furlongs in 1:09.57. Vicarino was another length farther back.

Two Step Salsa at rest - for now

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Two Step Salsa is a racehorse, not a machine. And on Monday morning, one day after the colt's impressive victory in the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap, trainer Julio Canani said it is premature to add Two Step Salsa to a list of probable starters for the Grade 2, $350,000 Swaps Stakes for 3-year-olds on July 12.

"He ran hard, he didn't finish his feed [Sunday night], and he's been lying down all morning," Canani said. "He already has run three times here, and how many horses can do that? Look what happened to Big Brown."

Sloppy prep good enough

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Mary Hartmann said she thought about scratching Presious Passion when the Battlefield Stakes came off the turf Sunday at Monmouth Park.

She opted to run in the slop, and the 5-year-old Presious Passion overcame trouble in the first turn to get second, 8 1/4 lengths behind Call My Bluff.

More importantly, Presious Passion got a needed prep before the biggest challenge of his career - Monmouth's Grade 1 United Nations Stakes on July 5.
