Wayzata Bay stuns Cornhusker rivals

The third time was the charm for Wayzata Bay as he pulled a huge upset in the Grade 2, $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap on Saturday night. Becoming the first horse to race three times in the Cornhusker, Wayzata Bay was sent off as the longest shot on the board in the seven-horse field and returned $78.80 to win.

Mast Track uncatchable in Gold Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif.-Mast Track was a stranger to jockey Tyler Baze until he climbed aboard the colt for Saturday's $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup. By the time they reached the backstretch, Baze felt like he was aboard an old friend.

Allowed an uncontested lead, Mast Track led throughout the Grade 1 Gold Cup, pulling a 10-1 upset in Hollywood Park's biggest race for older horses.

Dutrow, IEAH pull $82 upset with Frost Giant

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. went a long way Saturday toward mending fences with the International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Stable.

Two days after Michael Iavarone, the head of IEAH which owns majority interest in Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, said he had considered taking his horses away from Dutrow, the stable's red, white, and blue silks were in the winner's circle after 40-1 shot Frost Giant upset the Grade 1, $400,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

Shorter trip perfect for Leah's Secret

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Since Leah's Secret won the Anne Arundel Stakes on Nov. 25, 2006, at Laurel Park, she hasn't been able to find the winner's circle, but jockey Rene Douglas led her there late Saturday afternoon. Getting an ideal trip under Douglas, Leah's Secret pushed past Tequilas Dayjur in the final furlong and won the $150,000 Chicago Handicap by three-quarters of a length at windy Arlington Park.

Stumble can't stop Music Note

ELMONT, N.Y. - Proud Spell's return to the races didn't quite go as planned Saturday at Belmont Park.

The Kentucky Oaks winner stumbled badly at the break then was disqualified from second and placed third in the four-horse field.

Meanwhile, the $250,000 Mother Goose could prove to be a coming-out party for Music Note, who overcame a stumble of her own to win the Grade 1 race by 3 1/2 lengths. Never Retreat, who finished third, was elevated to second over Proud Spell. Hamsa finished last.

Garden District grabs Debutante

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The only one of the 10 fillies in the Debutante Stakes coming off a loss turned the tables on the entire field Saturday at Churchill Downs, where Garden District, getting a hurried but otherwise unobstructed trip under Robby Albarado, posted a gutsy victory as the favorite.

My Princess Jess hangs on

OCEANPORT, N.J. - My Princess Jess captured the Grade 3, $150,000 Boiling Springs Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the turf, giving jockey Joe Bravo a sweep of the Saturday stakes at Monmouth Park.

Bravo also won the $60,000 Spruce Fir Handicap with Open Skies.

My Princess Jess ($5.80) made her debut for trainer Barclay Tagg following a private purchase by the Lael Stables. She had won 2 of 5 coming into the race, most recently capturing an overnight stakes at Belmont Park on May 8.

Dukes Flying Tiger upsets

After tying a track record with five wins Friday, what did trainer Kirk Ziadie do for an encore? How about upset the $36,000 Heckofaralph Stakes with Dukes Flying Tiger, who wore down 9-5 co-favorite Winnies Tigger Too to post a one-length triumph in the five-furlong turf dash.

Dukes Flying Tiger had never hit the board in three previous starts on grass prior to the Heckofaralph. The son of Tiger Ridge rallied from just off the early pace, overtook Winnies Tigger Too inside the sixteenth pole, and gradually edged clear. Magazine Lane was another head back in third.

Populist makes early move

Caught wide onto the first turn, and with his mount asking to do more, jockey Travis Dunkelberger basically said, "To heck with it." Dunkelberger let Populist swoop to the lead, making an early move to seize the lead at the head of the backstretch, and Populist handled the rest, going on to a 1 3/4-length win in the $61,550 St. Georges Stakes on Saturday at Delaware Park.

Frisky Thunder keeps rolling

Six scratches, a solid pace in front of him, and 3-5 favorite Pleasant Strike still went down to another defeat, beaten a half-length by Frisky Thunder in the $60,000 Daniel Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs.

While Pleasant Strike now has lost eight straight races dating to his good win last summer in the Arlington Classic, Frisky Thunder is headed the other direction. A 4-year-old Thunder Rumble gelding trained by James Murphy for owner Braeburn Farm, Frisky Thunder has won three straight races at three different distances, ranging from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles.
