Blue Pepsi Lodge assigned 124 for Ponche

MIAMI - Blue Pepsi Lodge, the scourge of the local sprint division this season, will pay the price for all that success if he runs in next Saturday's $100,000 Ponche Handicap at Calder.

Racing secretary Mike Anifantis has assigned Blue Pepsi Lodge high weight of 124 pounds for the six-furlong Ponche, two more than stablemate Paradise Dancer. Finallymadeit, a multiple sprint stakes winner here last year and more recently the winner of the 1 1/16-mile Memorial Day Handicap, is next in line at 120, followed by Weigelia and Yesbyjimminy, both assigned 118.

Costa Rising nears return to training

Costa Rising, the Louisiana-bred who earned one of the top Beyer Speed Figures of 2007, is scheduled to resume training July 1. He has been out of action since late December, when he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a small bone chip from his left hind ankle. Costa Rising is rehabbing at owner Charles Castille's farm in Louisiana and upon his return to training will rejoin trainer Glenn Delahoussaye's stable at the Evangeline Downs Training Center in Lafayette, La.

"Everything has pretty much gone textbook with him so far," Delahoussaye said. "He looks fantastic."

Dancing Allstar may take on boys in Alberta Derby

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Terry Jordan indicated from Woodbine on Friday morning that he is leaning toward running Dancing Allstar against the boys in the $125,000 Alberta Derby next Saturday at Stampede Park. Jordan was in Ontario to oversee True Metropolitan's final bit of training leading into the Grade 3, $150,000 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine next Saturday.

Suffolk attemps to lure Big Brown, Curlin

In an attempt to lure both Curlin and Big Brown to the Massachusetts Handicap, Suffolk Downs has announced a bonus that could potentially bring the value of the race from $500,000 to $5 million.

The East Boston track announced it would raise the value of the Sept. 20 Mass Cap to $5 million if Big Brown goes on to win the Triple Crown in Saturday's Belmont Stakes and both horses enter the Mass Cap undefeated in 2008. The $5 million includes a $1 million appearance bonus for the connections of each horse.

Wake Up Maggie prepping in Redondo Beach

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Wake Up Maggie's win in the restricted Long Beach Stakes on May 14 has left trainer Julio Canani with the expectations of a big summer.

Canani has entered Wake Up Maggie in Saturday's $75,000 Redondo Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park with the intent of using the race as a prep for the $750,000 CashCall Mile on turf on July 5.

Canani is confident that Wake Up Maggie will win the Redondo Beach, which is run over a mile on turf for fillies and mares that have not won a Grade 1 or Grade 2 race at a mile or over this year.

Crown winner pulling for Big Brown

ELMONT, N.Y. - Three jockeys who rode a Triple Crown winner are still living: Ron Turcotte (Secretariat, 1973), Jean Cruguet (Seattle Slew, 1977), and Steve Cauthen (Affirmed, 1978).

But Billy Turner is the only surviving trainer of a Triple Crown winner, having been the conditioner of Seattle Slew when the colt became the first and only horse to sweep the series while still unbeaten.

Delaware Oaks a likely target for Storm Mesa

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Storm Mesa, who owns the year's best Beyer Speed Figure for a 3-year-old filly, will likely make her next start in the Delaware Oaks, her trainer, Bret Calhoun, said Wednesday. The Grade 2, $500,000 race will be run at Delaware Park on July 12.

El Gato Malo injured and out till fall

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - El Gato Malo, the winner of the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Derby last month, has been taken out of training with an undisclosed injury and is expected to return to racing in the fall, trainer Craig Dollase said on Wednesday.

Dollase declined to reveal the nature of the injury, but said that El Gato Malo was suffering from "wear and tear. We'll just give him some time. It's minor, what it is."
