Lava Man raises his owners' hopes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - To an extent, Lava Man revived his career with a game third in Saturday's Grade 1 Charles Whittingham Handicap at Hollywood Park.

The performance left the owners of the millionaire 7-year-old gelding and trainer Doug O'Neill dreaming of a record-breaking fourth consecutive win in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on June 28.

"That has got to be the game plan," O'Neill said.

O'Neill said that Lava Man emerged from the race "a little tired, but not bad."

Ginger Brew sticking with fillies

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Ginger Brew reigns the undisputed queen of the local 3-year-old fillies after her emphatic win in Sunday's $502,800 Woodbine Oaks.

But a return in the June 22 Queen's Plate is not a consideration for Ginger Brew, who races for Stronach Stable and is trained by Brian Lynch.

Team Stronach already has two prospects for the Queen's Plate in Harlem Rocker and Jungle Brew.

Harlem Rocker is trained by Todd Pletcher but is under Lynch's day-to-day care after finishing fourth when making his first start on Polytrack here in the May 31 Plate Trial.

Curlin breezes, but still on fence for Foster

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Curlin had what would be his final prep for the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap - if indeed owner Jess Jackson and trainer Steve Asmussen decide to run - when he breezed a half-mile in 49 seconds early Monday over a fast Churchill Downs racetrack.

With regular exercise rider Carmen Rosas aboard, Curlin went to the track at about 6:20 a.m. Working without company, and after getting a full head of steam to the half-mile pole, he went through fractions of 12.60 seconds, 24.60, 37, and 49, galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.80.
