Trainer, horse aim to relaunch careers

MIAMI - The 2006 Preakness will forever be remembered as the race during which Barbaro suffered his ultimately fatal injury and Bernardini emerged as a future champion. Few will remember the horse who finished second that day, Sweetnorthernsaint - the same Sweetnorthernsaint who two weeks earlier had gone postward as the tepid favorite over Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby.

Lyin' Heart looking like best around

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Perhaps the best 2-year-old colt to come out of the Lone Star Park meet this year ran here on Saturday. Curlin breezes for whatever's next

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Curlin had what would be his final prep for the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap - if indeed owner Jess Jackson and trainer Steve Asmussen decide to run - when he breezed a half-mile in 49 seconds early Monday over a fast Churchill Downs racetrack.

With regular exercise rider Carmen Rosas aboard, Curlin went to the track at about 6:20 a.m. Working without company, and after getting a full head of steam to the half-mile pole, he went through fractions of 12.60 seconds, 24.60, 37, and 49, galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.80.

Belmont Day numbers up from '07

The prospect of a Triple Crown on Saturday once again resulted in huge increases in business for Belmont Park compared with the previous year, but the numbers posted for Big Brown's failed attempt were nowhere near the last Triple Crown bid in 2004.

Attendance on a warm and muggy Saturday was 94,476, a 101.8 percent increase over the crowd last year, when a Triple Crown was not on the line. The attendance figure, however, was more than 25,000 short of the record posted in 2004 for Smarty Jones's failed bid, when a crowd of 120,139 showed up under cloudy skies.

Lethal Heat wins close one in Hollywood Oaks

Lethal Heat beat five rivals in Sunday's $157,600 Hollywood Oaks at Hollywood Park. Through the final quarter-mile, she had to turn back challenges from three of them.

Lethal Heat ($6.60) won by a head over Smooth Performer, who finished a nose in front of Tasha's Miracle. All three appeared as if they could win in the final strides. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Lethal Heat stalked longshot pacesetter Gambler's Justice before taking over in early stretch. Talamo had Lethal Heat a head in front of Tasha's Miracle at the eighth pole and vigorously rode Lethal Heat to the finish.
