Few willing to take on Footprint

CALGARY, Alberta – The $50,000 Herald Gold Plate, rescheduled after being washed out last weekend, and the $75,000 Penny Ridge form a stakes doubleheader here Sunday on the closing day of the Stampede Park meeting.

Footprint faces just three foes in the 1 1/16-mile Herald Gold Plate for 3-year-olds and upward, and looks to be loose on the lead under Real Simard. Alberta’s 2007 horse of the year, Footprint has taken up where he left off last season, with an allowance tally and a victory in the Teeworth Plate.

Time for Curlin to strut his stuff

Pyro, seventh in the Kentucky Derby, returns in the Northern Dancer on the Foster card, facing Derby foes Recapturetheglory and Visionaire.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Big Brown wore No. 1 as the 3-10 favorite in the Belmont Stakes last weekend. Curlin will wear No. 1 when he is bet down to similarly heavy favoritism Saturday in the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Steve Asmussen hopes the comparisons stop right there. Curlin, making his first start since winning the $6 million Dubai World Cup on March 29, “needs to show us he’s the same horse we’ve known all along,” said Asmussen. “He needs to run, and I believe I’ve got him ready. Now he needs to go out and show us.”

Brass Hat in chosen spot

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brass Hat traveled halfway around the world to finish second to a Dubai World Cup winner. It happened in March 2006, when Electrocutionist surged past Brass Hat to win the world’s richest race by 1 1/2 lengths.

Brass Hat later was accused of a medication violation and ultimately was disqualified from the runner-up’s share of $1.2 million in a decision that still rubs trainer Buff Bradley the wrong way.
