Smokin Bayou tops Asmussen exacta

Smokin Bayou powered to a five-length win over stablemate Sky Haven in the $65,000 Colleen Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

The Colleen, the prep for the $100,000 Sorority Stakes on Aug. 31, was one of three distaff stakes on the Saturday card.

One Man to Beat ($20.40) won the $65,000 Staybridge Suites for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, and Kosmo's Buddy ($17.80) took the $60,000 Crank It Up for 3-year-old grass sprinters.

Call It the Blues was on or near the lead every step of the way and improved her record to a perfect 3 for 3 over the River Downs turf course Saturday by winning the $50,000 Horizon.

Fly to Me up at the wire

Fly to Me ($13.80) ran down 3-5 favorite Sweet Lorena in the final strides to win the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares over six furlongs at Finger Lakes.

Sweet Lorena opened up a four-length lead into the stretch, but Fly to Me powered home, with Street Sass close behind, to catch the leader in the shadow of the wire. Fly to Me finished a head in front of Sweet Lorena, who was another head in front Street Sass.

Fly to Me, ridden by John Davila Jr. and trained by Michael Lecesse, covered the distance in 1:11.30.

Chasin Tiger wins first stakes

The 6-year-old gelding Chasin Tiger has improved dramatically over the last year and earned the first stakes start of his career in the $60,000 Chesapeake at Colonial Downs. He made the most of the opportunity, setting or forcing the pace in the six-furlong sprint outside of Great Seneca and then drawing clear for a 1 1/2-length victory.

Great Seneca held off the late-charging favorite Celtic Innis by a half-length for second.

Stones River pulls away in Shuk

Stones River ($3.80) made a three-wide move heading into the stretch on his way to his first stakes victory in the $75,300 Nick Shuk Memorial at Delaware Park. The 1 1/16-mile race was taken off the turf and run on a fast main track, with a scratch-reduced field of six.

Scratch pays dividends for Akronism

Delaware-based Akronism was scratched from Friday’s Grade 2 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga in favor of Saturday’s $163,400 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine. That proved to a wise move by trainer Tim Richey, as she got the job done in the six-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares.

Akronism stalked a hotly-contested front-end battle under Eurico Rosa Da Silva in the Grade 3 event. Favored Marina Ballerina and Sea the Joy hooked up through splits of 21.86 seconds and 44.23.

Danak takes second run at U.S. racing

Heros Reward pulls clear

Heros Reward ($2.80) kept within a length of the leaders until the top of the stretch before drawing away under steady encouragement from jockey Javier Castellano to win the five-furlong $100,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup on turf by 1 3/4 lengths Friday night at Penn National. Rouse the Cat finished second, a neck ahead of Hesa Big Star.

Unless business improves, purse cuts likely

DEL MAR, Calif. - A downturn in business through the first two weeks of the Del Mar meeting led to a discussion between track officials and executives of the Thoroughbred Owners of California on Friday regarding a potential purse cut.

Officials emphasized that no decision had been reached prior to the meeting, but that a purse cut was possible for the final 19 days of the 43-day meeting, beginning on Aug. 13. The third condition book, listing likely races from Aug. 13-25, is being finalized this weekend. The meeting ends on Sept. 3.
