Northern Dancer turned out to be quite a show

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Grade 1 Northern Dancer had been shaping up as the most competitive race on Sunday's Woodbine Mile card, and it did not disappoint.

Champs Elysees prevailed in a cavalry charge to the finish, scoring by a nose over Quijano as just one length separated the first five finishers in the $728,600 Northern Dancer at 1 1/2 miles on yielding turf.

Bobby Frankel, who trains the 5-year-old Champs Elysees, also was represented by the second-place finisher in the Woodbine Mile, the 4-year-old filly Ventura. Both horses are owned by Juddmonte Farms.

Bai and Bai sharp in comeback

POMONA, Calif. - Multiple stakes winner Bai and Bai ($3.60) returned from a six-month layoff with a solid comeback victory Sunday at Fairplex Park in the $63,050 E.B. Johnston Stakes for fillies and mares.

Aaron Gryder rode Bai and Bai for trainer Craig Dollase. The 5-year-old Bai and Bai has won 10 of 24 races and $667,618. Dona Amelia finished second,1 3/4 lengths behind the winner. Petite Cherie got third by a head over 8-5 second choice Chocolate Lava.

The final time for the 1 1/16-mile race was 1:44.22.

Pedroza wins seven twice in three days

POMONA, Calif. - Martin Pedroza is rolling sevens at the Los Angeles County Fair. Sunday at Fairplex Park, Pedroza rode seven winners. It was the second time in three days he accomplished the feat. Pedroza also rode seven winners on Friday, opening day.

Pedroza rode six of the first seven winners Sunday, including five favorites and Topper Shopper, winner of the Foothill Stakes in race 5. After sitting out race 8, he lost races 9 and 10, then guided $26.40 longshot Kirby’s Glue Foot to a come-from-behind victory in race 11.

Rahy's Attorney surprises at Woodine

Rahy's Attorney earned a guaranteed starting spot in the BC Mile at Santa Anita on Oct. 25.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Locally-based Rahy's Attorney pulled off a 12-1 upset in Sunday's $1,078,200 Woodbine Mile, while heavily favored Kip Deville could only manage fifth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Win and You’re In race.

Rahy's Attorney got an astute ground-saving ride from Slade Callaghan, who had him placed just behind pacemaker Just Rushing on the backstretch, through fractions of 24.47 and:48.25 seconds, over a course labeled yielding.

Big Drama much the best once again

MIAMI - Big Drama duplicated the performance he gave in the Dr. Fager Stakes three weeks earlier with a similarly easy 3 1/2-length triumph over Three Part Harmony in Saturday's $150,000 Affirmed Stakes, middle leg of the open division of the Florida Stallion series, on Saturday at Calder.

You Luckie Mann, the 6-5 favorite, finished a tiring third.

The Affirmed was the highlight of Calder's Juvenile Showcase, a 12-race program featuring all races for 2-year-olds.

Shopton Lane cruises in slop

Shopton Lane ($2.80) relied on his superior speed to outrun three opponents over a sloppy track to win the $67,900 Formal Gold Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

A 4-year-old colt ridden by Jose Lezcano for trainer Bruce Levine, Shopton Lane was unpressured through soft fractions of 25.69 seconds, 50.34, and 1:13.85 in the 1 1/16-mile race and finished three lengths in front of 5-2 second choice Indy Wind, covering the distance in 1:43.86.

C.S. Silk cruises in Lassie

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The last time she had raced, C.S. Silk cruised to a six-furlong dirt maiden win on July 6 at Churchill Downs, but Saturday in the Arlington-Washington Lassie, the scene looked much different: First time on Polytrack, first time at a middle distance, and first start against other winners.

"There were a lot of different angles there for her," said jockey Robby Albarado.

Tough Tiz's Sis in the clear in Ruffian

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Bob Baffert didn't need his star filly to win Saturday's Grade 1 Ruffian. His backup did the job just fine, thank you.

Baffert scratched his champion Indian Blessing from the Ruffian, but still won it anyway, as Tough Tiz's Sis splashed her way to a 12 1/4-length victory in the $300,000 Ruffian at Belmont Park. Copper State, second to Ginger Punch in the Go for Wand, managed second again by 1 1/4 lengths length over Stage Luck.

Miraculous Miss, Rite Moment, 5-2 favorite Spring Waltz, Little Belle, and Boca Grande completed the order of finish.

Sweet Hope loves slop in Endine

Sweet Hope passed her first test against older fillies and mares and handled her first experience over a wet track when she held off Cash's Girl by a half-length to win Saturday's Grade 3, $205,000 Endine Stakes at Delaware Park.
