Cenzontle goes last to first

The stretch-running Cenzontle ($11.60) took advantage of a fast pace, rallying from the rear of the pack to a half-length victory over Mr. Silver in the $55,000 The Vid Stakes.

Cenzontle did not have a horse beat going around the clubhouse turn of the 7 1/2-furlong The Vid, but moved into contention under jockey Ariel Smith leaving the backstretch.

Cenzontle, a 4-year-old son of Smart Strike, raced wide turning for home, engaged Mr. Silver near midstretch, then gradually edged away.

Seattle Smooth upsets Proud Spell

Seattle Smooth damaged Proud Spell's bid to nail down the 3-year-old filly championship and may have forced trainer Larry Jones to alter his plans by scoring an emphatic 2 1/2-length victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $750,000 Fitz Dixon Cotillion at Philadelphia Park.

Proud Spell, sent off as the 1-2 favorite in a field reduced to six 3-year-old fillies by the scratch of Never Retreat, had to settle for second, a neck in front of 60-1 pacesetter Color Me Up, after going wide coming into the stretch while making a belated rally.

Stormy Ballad wins maiden in stakes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - No wins trumped nowhere to run in the $100,000 Lake Michigan Stakes on Saturday at Arlington Park, with the maiden Stormy Ballad home first by one length over tough-trip favorite Amazing Results.

Stormy Ballad had lost all nine of his races coming into the Lake Michigan, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race for 3-year-olds. He had lost races at Tampa, Gulfstream, and Arlington, and on turf, dirt, and synthetic tracks. But things set up perfectly for Stormy Ballad on Saturday.
