Track plans 21 stakes, but no Pimlico Special

Pimlico Racecourse has canceled the Grade 1 Pimlico Special for the third time in eight years as it struggles to make ends meet on a weakening racing circuit.

The $250,000 Special, a 1 1/8-mile race for older horses that was also canceled in 2002 and 2007, will be suspended for one year, Pimlico said Tuesday, along with the Barbaro Stakes, a $100,000 race for 3-year-olds. However, Pimlico has reinstated the Grade 3 William Donald Schaefer Handicap, a $100,000 race with conditions similar to that of the Pimlico Special.

The one-two finishers in the New Orleans Handicap on Saturday at Fair Grounds are marching staunchly forward into an uncertain future, with next-race plans still fluid for Macho Again, who rallied late to win the race, and Secret Getaway, who was nailed after setting a fast pace in a game effort.

Fantasy likely for Rachel Alexandra

Rachel Alexandra has won three consecutive stakes, including last Saturday's Fair Grounds Oaks, Oaklawn's Martha Washington (above), and the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill on Nov. 29.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Rachel Alexandra will follow one of two paths to the Grade 1, $500,000 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 1, according to her trainer, Hal Wiggins. She will either train up to the 1 1/8-mile race following her dominant win last Saturday in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks, or she will have her final prep April 5 in the Grade 2, $250,000 Fantasy at her home track of Oaklawn Park.

"I think we're 90 percent going in the Fantasy," said Wiggins, who trains Rachel Alexandra for Dolph Morrison and Mike Lauffer.

Jibboom's racing days are over

ARCADIA, Calif. - Jibboom injured a suspensory winning the Grade 2 Buena Vista Handicap on the main track Feb. 16, and has been retired from racing, trainer Bobby Frankel said. Although the injury is not always career-ending, it requires a lengthy recovery period.

"She's a 5-year-old, and it would take eight or nine months," Frankel said.

Lady Railrider headed for a Gold Rush event

ALBANY, Calif. - Lady Railrider's victory in Saturday's Work the Crowd Stakes only served to reaffirm that she is arguably the best older female California-bred running on the main track.

She was second to Florida-bred Leah's Secret in the Sunshine Millions Distaff and has won two straight Cal-bred stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

Trainer Steve Specht will point her to either the seven-furlong B. Thoughtful Stakes or the 1 1/16-mile Fran's Valentine during Hollywood Park's Gold Rush Day on April 25.

Big A 3-year-olds posting big numbers

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - No one will ever confuse winter at Aqueduct with the more glamorous race meets on the calendar, but some of the nation's fastest 3-year-olds have been heating up the inner dirt recently.

In the aftermath of last weekend's Kentucky Derby preps, I Want Revenge's tour de force run in the Gotham, which earned a 113 Beyer Speed Figure, remained the fastest two-turn performance by a 3-year-old.

Lane's End lures top riders

If big-name jockeys equate to a big-time race, well, that's what the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes should be Saturday. Garrett Gomez, Edgar Prado, Kent Desormeaux, and Julien Leparoux are among the riders who will be at Turfway Park for the 38th running of the Lane's End, the annual showcase event at the Florence, Ky., track.

It helps that the Lane's End found something of a hole on the racing calendar in general and the Kentucky Derby trail in particular. While four Derby preps were run last weekend, the Grade 2 Lane's End is the only prep on the schedule this weekend.

Pompa cuts ties with Reynolds

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Pat Reynolds didn't have long to celebrate Backseat Rhythm's thrilling nose victory in Saturday's Grade 3 Hillsborough Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

On Sunday, Backseat Rhythm and eight other horses Reynolds conditioned for owner Paul Pompa Jr. were transferred to other trainers as Pompa ended his five-year relationship with Reynolds. Reynolds, who had lost his previous 20 races with Pompa-owned horses before the Hillsborough, said his stable is now down to four.
