Chalk players love Lone Star

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Identify the favorite and cash.

That could be the mantra for the current meet at Lone Star Park. Post-time favorites have been winning at a 41 percent rate over the first 38 dates of the meet, compared with the standard third of the time at most tracks. So far, 153 of the 366 races run to date have been taken by favorites, according to statistics provided by Lone Star. And the story was much the same last year, with favorites winning at a 39 percent rate over the course of the 65-date meet in Grand Prairie.

Joey P. continues quest for $1M in Charles Town Dash

OCEANPORT, N.J. - One nice day. That's all trainer Ben Perkins Jr. asks, a break in the recent rainy stretch on the Jersey Shore so he can give Joey P. a solid workout.

That's all it takes. One drill, and the amazingly durable 7-year-old gelding will be ready to defend his title in the $250,000 Charles Town Invitational Dash on June 20.

Joey P. won last year's edition by three lengths, the only victory of the 16 in his career garnered outside New Jersey.

"I'm expecting that race to come up tougher," Perkins said.

Change of plan pays off for Torres

BOSSIER CITY, La. - For someone who was not supposed to be at Louisiana Downs this summer, jockey Francisco Torres has been rather high-profile. Torres was just one win behind defending riding champ Don Simington in the standings entering this week's racing, having visited the winner's circle 16 times. Torres, 39, had ridden just 73 mounts compared to Simington's 114.

Originally scheduled to ride at Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania this summer, Torres said he and agent Derek Ducoing rethought their plans at the last minute.

Susan B. Anthony Handicap wide open

Sunday's $50,000 Susan B. Anthony Handicap at Finger Lakes may have lost its star attraction, but the six-furlong sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares is now a more interesting race for handicappers.

Trainer Rick Dutrow indicated Friday that he intends to run the 4-year-old By the Light, 10 for 16 lifetime with earnings of $866,785, in Sunday's $65,000 What a Summer at Belmont Park, where she faces just four rivals, and avoids having to carry the 128 pounds she was assigned for the Susan B. Anthony, where she would have been odds-on.
