It was the fifth consecutive victory for Seattle Smooth, but her first Grade 1, the goal that Dutrow had for Seattle Smooth when he stopped on her following her victory in last September's Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes over eventual 3-year-old filly champion Proud Spell.

L D's Shes Special romps in sloppy Hawkeyes

Friday evening's torrential downpours turned what was already a wide-open renewal of the $70,000 Hawkeyes Handicap at Prairie Meadows into a sloppy quagmire. Moreover, demanding early fractions, set by 7-2 second choice Sakakawea, of 22.59 and 46.75 seconds ensured that the 1 1/16-mile race for Iowa-bred fillies and mares would be a test of stamina.

Costalivin, seventh in the Plate Trial, works Friday morning with Melanie Giddings up.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Steve Attard has high hopes for Keino West in next Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate.

But Attard's first order of business is this Sunday's $100,000 Zadracarta, and his stable star, Saskawea, should be the horse to beat in the six-furlong turf race for Ontario-foaled fillies and mares.

Saskawea won the Avowal, an overnight stakes at seven furlongs on turf here last Sept. 27, and finished up her campaign with a solid second-place finish in the Grade 3, seven-furlong Bessarabian on Nov. 23.
