Talamo flush with day's five-spot

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Give Joe Talamo a high five.

The 19-year-old riding phenom won five races on Sunday to double his previous total for the entire meet and vault into second place in the Hollywood Park jockeys' standings, one behind Joel Rosario, who leads with 11.

The five wins equaled the career best for Talamo, who won five races once at Fair Grounds while an apprentice.

"I never even thought I could win five today," Talamo said after Sunday's final race. "I was hoping for a couple."

Field Commission, a 4-year-old trained by Danny Vella, had won graded sprint stakes here on dirt and turf while El Brujo, a 3-year-old conditioned by Malcolm Pierce, had bagged four sprint stakes against his own age group, including back-to-back Grade 3's in Kentucky.

But when the air had cleared following the six-furlong Kennedy Road it was Smokey Fire, a 4-year-old gelding who was making his stakes debut, who emerged a three-quarter-length winner at 6-1 with Field Commission second and El Brujo 4 1/4 lengths back in seventh.

Millionaires to square off in Falls City

Swift Temper will look to rebound from a pair of disappointing efforts in Thursday's Fall City Handicap.

thLOUISVILLE, Ky. - A couple of millionaire mares who know their way around a racetrack will be whetting the fans' appetites for a terrific final few days of racing at Churchill Downs when they clash Thursday in the 94th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Falls City Handicap.

Swift Temper and Unbridled Belle drew alongside each other in posts 4 and 5 as the 122-pound highweights in a field of just six fillies and mares entered in the 1 1/8-mile Falls City.

Bold Chieftain making a final start at home

Northern California fans will probably have their last chance to say goodbye to their latest millionaire on Friday when Bold Chieftain runs in the $50,000 San Quentin at Golden Gate Fields.

Bold Chieftain made history in his last start when he became the first horse to win the California Cup Classic twice. His victory in the Oct. 3 race at Santa Anita pushed him to $1,083,411 in career earnings.

Pleasant Storm finishes fast at Remington

Pleasant Storm established himself as an Oklahoma-bred to watch on Sunday, when he closed from next to last to win the $60,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile at Remington Park and remain undefeated in two starts. He won by a widening two lengths over Hollywood Ice, while it was another half-length back in third to Right Squall.

Pleasant Storm ($11.20) had one horse beat early in the six-furlong race, began to move at about the three-eighths pole. and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:10.93. Bryan McNeil rode the winner for Vickie Fixley and trainer Joe Petalino.

Bickersons caps Talamo's five-win day

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - In less than a week, jockey Joe Talamo went from the sick bed to the top of the heap. He won five races on Sunday's card at Hollywood Park, including riding Bickersons to a front-running victory in the $100,000 for 2-year-old fillies.

Tribal Belle solidifies Sovereign credentials

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tribal Belle seemingly wrapped up the Sovereign Award for Canada's champion female sprinter with her victory in Sunday's $156,500 at Woodbine.

Tribal Belle ($3.60) tracked the leaders on the outside in the seven-furlong sprint, as 37-1 shot Silver Z set fractions of 22.39 and 45.30 seconds.

Tribal Belle hit the front exiting the turn, and then held a game Silver Z at bay through the stretch to prevail by a half-length, in a time of 1:22.29. Smart Surprise rallied wide to edge out Glitter Rox for third in the 10-horse field.

Three in row for Groomedforvictory

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Groomedforvictory drew off to a 3 1/4-length victory over Naughty New Yorker in Sunday's $67,000 for New York-breds at Aqueduct.

A 4-year-old gelding trained by Barclay Tagg, Groomedforvictory got his third straight win, all against statebreds.

The 6-5 favorite, Groomedforvictory ($4.40) and jockey Ramon Dominguez pressed the pace set by Be Bullish before taking charge on the turn and opening up at the top of the lane.

Naughty New Yorker rallied from eighth to nail down the place spot.

The time was 1:36.74 for one mile on a fast track.

Russell Road remains king of West Virginia

Russell Road reaffirmed his status as the best West Virginia-bred in training by cruising to his fifth straight stakes victory Saturday night at Charles Town.

Five weeks after he dominated older horses in the $450,000 West Virginia Breeders' Classic, the 3-year-old Russell Road ($2.20) romped to an eight-length score in the $51,100 A Huevo Stakes for statebreds.

Ridden by Travis Dunkelberger for trainer James W. Casey, Russell Road completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.66 -- slightly more than two seconds faster than his win over an extremely sloppy track in last month's Classic.

Shudacudawudya overcomes trouble

ALBANY, Calif. - Despite clipping heels and stumbling midway around the turn, Shudacudawudya rallied to win the $62,900 Golden Nugget Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

A 2-year-old son of Marino Marini owned and bred by Bret Mason, Shudacudawudya held off favored Sourdough Sam, whose closing rush fell three-quarters of a length short in the six-furlong stakes for 2-year-olds. Sourdough Sam edged Shudacudawudya by a similar margin in their previous start.

Pacesetter Tiny Woods was third another 1 lengths back. Shudcudawudya won in 1:09.46 and paid $21.40.
