European style suits Delacour

OLDSMAR, Fla. - If you're the kind of player who likes stables with a European flavor, then look no further than the Leigh Delacour outfit at Tampa Bay Downs.

Like European horses, most of the residents of the Delacour shed row are turf runners. They are trained to settle early, and do their best running in the stretch. That Euro strategy is obviously working.

Delacour, 29, has sent out 5 winners from her last 11 starters. Her overall record at the meet is 8 for 32, a very respectable 25 percent.

Quality Road awarded 121 Beyer for Donn

Turns out Quality Road's record-setting 12 3/4-length victory in Saturday's Grade 1 Donn Handicap was as statistically brilliant as it was visually impressive. Quality Road, who set a track mark of 1:47.49 for 1 1/8 miles, was awarded a career-best 121 Beyer Speed Figure for his performance in the Donn, easy eclipsing his former high of 113 earned in the 2009 Fountain of Youth. Quality Road also won the Florida Derby, with a Beyer of 111, here a year ago.

Best work yet for Buddy's Saint

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Bruce Levine says he has trouble sleeping the night before his Kentucky Derby hopeful Buddy's Saint is scheduled to work. But it's a good bet Levine slept like a baby on Sunday evening after watching his 3-year-old prospect breeze six furlongs in 1:12.68 under jockey Jose Lezcano here at Gulfstream Park that morning.

Peppi Knows eyes Gotham

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - It is unlikely you'll find Peppi Knows on anyone's list of Kentucky Derby contenders, but the gelding's 3-year-old debut in Saturday's Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct was encouraging enough to his connections to give him the opportunity to join the Triple Crown trail.

Richard's Kid finishes like a rocket

Benoit & Associates
Richard's Kid and Garrett Gomez (right) make a furious closing rush to win Sunday's San Antonio at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The elements that seemed to work against Richard's Kid in Sunday's $150,000 at Santa Anita - a slow pace and a position at the back of the field with three furlongs remaining - made his narrow victory after a remarkable stretch rally even more breathtaking.

Winning for the first time since the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar last September, Richard's Kid closed 8 1/2 lengths in the final three furlongs to win by a head over 34-1 Dakota Phone.

Richard's Kid ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.05.

Lake pair may switch spots in Philly rematch

When the Scott Lake-trained stablemates faced each other last month, the 6-year-old Indian Delight beat the 4-year-old Threetimesawonder by nearly six lengths.

But even though Indian Delight had to steady in the stretch run while losing by just a half-length and Threetimesawonder had no visible excuse in finishing fourth, there are logical reasons to believe the tables could be turned when they are rematched in Tuesday's featured ninth race at Philadelphia Park.

The first-level allowance for fillies and mares drew a field of eight going 6 1/2 furlongs.

Bim Bam outfights Interactif by a nose

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer David Brownlee said a Calder horsse such as Bim Bam never gets any respect. He will now!

Bim Bam, who won stakes on turf and dirt over his home track at 2, not only earned that respect but did it the hard way after surviving a stretch-long battle with 4-5 favorite Interactif to post a nose decision in Sunday's $125,000 at Gulfstream Park. It was another two lengths farther back to Asphalt in third.

Quality Road sets two records in Donn

Bob Coglianese
Quality Road and John Velazquez leave the field far behind in the Donn Handicap.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Quality Road turned in one of the most impressive performances in the history of the storied on Saturday when he drew off to a record-setting 12 3/4-length victory over Dry Martini and seven other overmatched rivals at Gulfstream Park.

The victory was a measure of satisfaction for Quality Road's trainer, Todd Pletcher, who saddled Take the Points only 30 minutes earlier to finish first in the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap but saw Take the Points disqualified for impeding a horse near the sixteenth pole.
