Iwillgotothemoon switches back to turf for Vice Regent

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Iwillgotothemoon was an impressive winner when making his turf debut at 6 1/2 furlongs here at Woodbine for trainer Steve Attard. On Sunday, Iwillgotothemoon will be returning to that surface for the $125,000 Vice Regent, a one-mile race for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.

“I’d never worked him, or trained him, on grass,” said Attard. “I just ran him on it, and he loved it.”

Hancock entry looks strong in Bassinet

Trainer John Hancock will be alongside the Ohio River as usual Saturday, but not at his lifelong stomping grounds of Ellis Park. Instead, Hancock will have made the 3 1/2-hour drive upstream from Henderson, Ky., to run a pair of contenders in the Bassinet Stakes at River Downs, which lies on the banks of the Ohio just east of downtown Cincinnati.

Saratoga pick six pays $377K to four winners

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - There were four winning tickets sold on Wednesday’s pick six at Saratoga, each worth $377,883. The consolation payout (5 of 6) was $983.

Two of the winning tickets were sold through AmericaTAB, an account wagering service in Ohio, one in New Jersey, and one at Connecticut OTB.

The day began with a carryover of $443,274 after the wager went unhit Sunday and Monday. An additional $1,925,068 was bet into the pool on Wednesday.

Goncalves got off to an early, early start

Leandro Goncalves won three races Sunday at Hoosier Park to get within three wins of leading rider Francisco Torres.

Goncalves won on An Ounce of Haven ($7) in the second, Reflate the Bubble ($3) in the fifth, and Unreachable Star ($4.20) in the eighth race, the Brickyard Stakes.

Goncalves, a 28-year-old native of Brazil, won the riding title at Turfway Park last September and the Indiana Downs title this spring. He hopes to add Hoosier Park to that list.

Thistle will race solo after River Downs closes

Beginning Tuesday, Thistledown will race solo through the end of its meet, Nov. 6. River Downs, its 7&7 partner since April, concludes its 2010 season on Labor Day and unlike in past seasons, Thistledown will not split 7&7 cards with Beulah Park. Instead, it will schedule eight-race cards each day with a post time of 1:20 p.m,
Thistledown adds Thursdays to its racing schedule next week.

Jones has full plate on holiday weekend

Over the next few days, trainer Paul Jones will inspect about 300 sale yearlings, run horses in the $1.54 million All American Derby on Sunday, the $2 million All American Futurity on Monday, and try to accommodate all the people who only "need five minutes."

Such is the life of the nation's leading Quarter Horse trainer on Labor Day weekend at Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. "It's hell week," Jones said of all the activity.

Ouzts sets River Downs riding record

Jockey Perry Ouzts won his 83rd race of the Jockey Club meet at River Downs on Tuesday aboard Regent’s Daughter ($3.60), setting a record for victories by a jockey at the meet. The 56-year-old Ouzts eclipsed the record of 82 set by Dean Sarvis in 2004. Prior to Sarvis, the record for was held by Steve Neff for 18 years.

Down Town Allen pointing to Charles Town Oaks

Owner-trainer John Casey plans to point his star 3-year-old filly Down Town Allen to the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks on Sept. 18.

The seven-furlong Oaks, the richest sprint in the country for 3-year-old fillies, will be Down Town Allen’s third stakes venture against open company this season. Previously, she won the $100,000 Lady Charles Town and the $85,000 West Virginia Secretary State at Mountaineer.
