Meet has been a feast for chalk players

POMONA, Calif. – The barrage of winning chalk has continued at Fairplex Park, where post-time favorites won 54 of the first 112 Thoroughbred races (48 percent) through Thursday. The predictability of the races, combined with small fields, helped bettors nail the $1 win pick nine Thursday for the first time at the meet.

Mekong Melody seeks Flaming Page repeat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The $100,000 Flaming Page, an overnight stakes for fillies and mares, will be run for the seventh time here at Woodbine on Sunday. And, it’s quite possible that the winning trainer will be experiencing a sense of déjà vu as Roger Attfield, Michael Doyle, Mark Casse, and Mike Keogh have combined to account for five of the first six runnings of the Flaming Page and each will be represented in this year’s 10-horse field.

Smith to ride Twirling Candy in Goodwood

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will ride the undefeated 3-year-old Twirling Candy for the first time in the $250,000 Goodwood Stakes at Hollywood Park next Saturday, replacing Joel Rosario, who rides in Pennsylvania that day.

Smith had the option of riding Richard’s Kid, winner of the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 28, in the Goodwood, but was asked by trainer John Sadler to ride Twirling Candy, who is owned by Jenny Craig.

“I approached him,” Sadler said.

Lookout Dubai, Outoftheclouds attempt to go longer in Ascot Graduation

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Lookout Dubai and Outoftheclouds look like the main players in the $50,000 Ascot Graduation for 2-year-olds at Hastings on Sunday. All of the 11 horses entered will be stretching out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time.

The Ascot Graduation is one of three stakes supporting the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby. The nine-race card features full fields in most races and is easily the best card of the year at Hastings. Russell Baze adds a lot of luster to day with mounts in all four stakes.

Rain continues to vex Calder grass opportunities

MIAMI – The Calder grass course might be green from all the rain that has soaked the south Florida area this summer, but it has certainly not been greener for local trainers who have been frustrated trying to get their horses in on the turf here for much of the meet, especially during the past several weeks.

Baffert's entry tough to top in Hinds

POMONA, Calif. – Trainer Bob Baffert can fill a gap in his résumé Sunday at Fairplex Park, where Spurrier and Red Door Drive are favored to give Baffert his first victory in the $75,000 Ralph M. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap.

“Any time you can win a major stakes where they have a Ferris wheel is an honor,” Baffert said.

Any time the two best horses are coupled in the betting, they are difficult to oppose. The entry of Spurrier and Red Door Drive, owned by Arnold Zetcher, is 6-5 on the early line in the centerpiece race of the Los Angeles County Fair meet.

Time and the place is right for You Go West Girl

ELMONT, N.Y. – When it comes to Belmont Park, You Go West Girl is not only a horse for course she is a horse for the season.

You Go West Girl has won 3 of 6 starts at Belmont, but she is 3 for 4 during Belmont’s fall meet. Trainer Tom Proctor and owner Craig Bernick hope You Go West Girl’s affinity for Belmont and cooler weather continues Sunday when she heads a seven-horse field entered in the $100,000 John Hettinger Stakes for New York-bred females going 1 1/8 miles over Belmont’s inner turf.

Biofuel heavy favorite in Selene Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario − Biofuel, last year's co-champion 2-year-old filly in Canada, will be a short price when she takes on seven other 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Woodbine in the Grade 3, $250,000 Selene Stakes.

Biofuel  had also been under consideration for this Saturday’s Grade 2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, a race which is expected to attract the leader of the 3-year-old filly division in North America, Blind Luck. But trainer Reade Baker elected to remain at home for Sunday's race.

Violette again well armed for Consignors Futurity

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Trainer Rick Violette Jr. has had considerable success in the National Association of Two-Year-Old Consignors Futurity in the brief history of the stakes that began in 2002.

Violette won in 2005 with What’s Your Edge and in 2007 with the filly Phantom Income. He is back for more on Sunday at Monmouth Park.

Violette has a solid contender, and the likely favorite, in each of the six-furlong $200,000 divisions for horses who have been cataloged in 2010 with a paid 2010 advertising-fund fee.

Blame delays final work for Jockey Club Gold Cup

Blame, the leading candidate for the Jockey Club Gold Cup, is likely to have his final pre-race blowout at Keeneland on Monday instead of Sunday, trainer Al Stall Jr. said.

“He’s had two very strong works the last two Sundays, and I’m wanting to give him just a little more time before he goes an easy half-mile,” Stall said. “It’ll be just a little tightener, no big deal. We’re pretty much set anyway.”
