Bruce's Dream a sentimental favorite in California Cup Mile

INGLEWOOD, Calif. − Sentimentally, it was a great idea. Realistically, the spur-of-the-moment idea to claim Remember Dorothy at Del Mar in 2000 looked iffy. Who really needs a 2-year-old filly who was a well-beaten fourth and fifth in her first two starts and was dropping in for a $32,000 price for the first time?

For Bruce Corwin and his son, David, that was not a factor. Less than two weeks earlier, Bruce’s mother, Dorothy, had died, and they had found a filly who, by coincidence, had the perfect name.

Luckarack's post should help avoid trouble

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Luckarack’s three-race unbeaten streak ended with a fifth-place finish in the Angel Island Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Sept. 11, a loss that left trainer Steve Specht puzzled.

“He didn’t run as well as I thought he would,” Specht said. “The next afternoon he had a temperature and was sick for a couple of days. Maybe he had something coming on. I’m pretty high on the colt, but that last one put some doubt in my mind.”

Oak Tree Mile one-two finishers meet again in Cal Cup Mile

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile at Hollywood Park on Oct. 9 was supposed to be a preview of California’s best hopes for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6. Instead, the turf race turned out to be an advance showing of two of the top runners in Saturday’s $100,000 California Cup Mile.

The 5-year-old geldings Liberian Freighter and Colgan’s Chip finished just a nose apart and are two of the top contenders in Saturday’s Cal Cup Mile, which is run on turf and has drawn a field of six.

Clash of surface specialists in Fayette

LEXINGTON, Ky. – As Keeneland concludes its fifth fall meet with Polytrack as the main racing surface, the general consensus is that horses with established synthetic form tend to have an edge, although grass horses also fare well on Poly. These handicapping tenets will be mixed and matched to their limits Saturday when the $150,000 Fayette Stakes helps to close the 17-day fall meet.

Southern Ridge looks to make up for lost time in Big Brown

OCEANPORT, N.J. – A virus wiped out a promising summer for Southern Ridge.

Looking to make up lost time while also taking advantage of the dwindling number of stakes for 3-year-olds left this season, Southern Ridge faces six rivals Saturday in the $70,000 Big Brown Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth Park.

This will be only fifth start for Southern Ridge, the most lightly raced colt in field. At the other end of the spectrum, Calvello has already been to the post 21 times.

U R All That I Am cuts back to sprint in California Cup Distaff

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – U R All That I Am spent the early months of 2010 running successfully in sprints and the last few months padding her r é sum é in two-turn races.

For Saturday’s $100,000 California Cup Distaff at Hollywood Park, she will revert to sprinting in the six-furlong turf race, her first appearance in such a race since a game second to Unzip Me in the Irish O’Brien Stakes on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita last March.

Unzip Me has been pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Lisvernane looks to break through in Princess Elizabeth

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Maidens are prevalent in Saturday’s $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, and Lisvernane has as good a chance as any in the 1 1/16-mile route for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Lisvernane is trained by Carolyn Costigan, who won last year’s Princess Elizabeth with Roan Inish, a gifted maiden from Ireland. Roan Inish evolved into one of Woodbine’s leading 3-year-old fillies this year, during which she won the Woodbine Oaks and ran third in the Queen’s Plate.

Short rest for In the Juice in Brandywine

In the Juice easily handled the challenge of racing twice within 13 days. But can he run just as well while making his third start in four weeks?

That’s the key handicapping question involving the 4-year-old In the Juice, one of several logical contenders in Saturday’s $125,000 Brandywine Stakes at Delaware Park.
