Plenty of contenders in turf allowance

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 17-day Keeneland fall meet hits its midpoint Wednesday with far less fanfare than it started Oct. 8, but hey, that’s the way it goes. A front-loaded meet necessitated by timing toward the Breeders’ Cup usually lays the Keeneland cupboard bare at some point, and the Wednesday card seems a sampling of that.

"He is always such a nice horse to ride." Said Pompell, aboard for all three To Much Coffee victories. "I had him fourth sitting behind the pace through the stretch and tried to keep him along the inside. But I didn't want to get him trapped. With an emphasis on 2-year-olds, the best of which are being pointed to track owner MI Developments’s bonus programs for 3-year-olds next year, one might expect Golden Gate Fields to come up with a clever title for the 45-day meet that opens Wednesday.

The Meet of Great Expectations? The Meet of Future Stars?

“We’re just calling it the 2010 fall meeting,” said Golden Gate Fields general manager Robert Hartman.

Even without a fancy moniker, Hartman says, “It should be a great meet.”
