Stall will follow a familiar path with Apart

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The odds are almost impossible, yet Al Stall Jr. probably is going to give them a try. The same blueprint he used to perfection with Blame will be rolled out again if Stall runs Apart as a 3-year-old in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap on Nov. 26 at Churchill Downs.

Last fall, Blame won the Clark in what proved to be a springboard to a wildly successful 4-year-old campaign that ended with his dramatic victory last weekend in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill. Of course, it is a long, long way from the 2010 Clark to the 2011 BC Classic at Churchill.

Caracortado has tough spot for return

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Caracortado, unraced since finishing seventh in the Preakness Stakes in May, starts in an optional claimer over six furlongs on turf in Thursday’s seventh race at Hollywood Park.

It will not be an easy race for Caracortado, who races for a partnership that includes trainer Mike Machowsky. The field of 11 includes a stakes-winning stablemate in Dance With Gable; Cherokee Heaven, a stakes winner at Santa Anita in January; Stoneside, who was stakes-placed here in July; and the Brazilian stakes winner Lieve.

Homeister likes her chances on Your Round

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rosemary Homeister Jr. is the fifth and most recent woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby, having finished 13th aboard 43-1 shot Supah Blitz in the 2003 running. That was little more than a cameo appearance at Churchill Downs for Homeister, who has been based at a number of East Coast tracks since she began riding professionally more than 18 years ago, but she’s working on changing that.

Homeister has been riding regularly at Churchill for the first time this fall, much to her delight.

Casse well pleased with Delightful Mary's showing

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Seven horses shipped south from Woodbine for the Breeders’ Cup.

And while all of their connections were happy to have been part of the show, the man who had the most to cheer about was trainer Mark Casse, who sent out Delightful Mary for a third-place finish in Friday’s Juvenile Fillies.

“It was a very good weekend – it was almost great,” said Casse, who trains Delightful Mary for owner John Oxley. “I was very proud of her.”

Molinaro Warrior keeps hot jockey for allowance dash

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Molinaro Warrior is coming off a much-improved effort under hot jockey Luis Contreras and should be prominent as the favorite in Thursday’s opener, a five-furlong, first-level allowance for Ontario-sired runners.

Molinaro Warrior had a productive spring for trainer Ross Armata, during which he won his maiden over six furlongs following three straight top-three placings in Ontario-sired maiden special company. His first try against winners July 16 resulted in a commendable second in a $40,000 claimer, behind the upwardly mobile Riding the River.

Let the Horse of the Year debate begin

Barbara D. Livingston
Blame (right) beat Zenyatta to the wire in the Breeders' Cup Classic and he will now try to hold her off for the Horse of the Year title.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The five leading contenders for Horse of the Year were all in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs, and though two of them finished just a head apart for the win, with Blame holding off Zenyatta in a thriller, the debate over who should be Horse of the Year seems certain to last at least another two months, right through the Eclipse Awards on Jan. 17 in Miami Beach, Fla.

61,826 reasons to like Aqueduct card and its carryover

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The pick six went unhit on both Saturday and Sunday at Aqueduct, resulting in a pick-six carryover of $61,826 entering Wednesday’s card.

Wednesday’s sequence looks challenging with three of the six races scheduled for the turf. After a combination of sleet, rain, and cold on Monday, the weather was expected to improve beginning Tuesday and dry conditions should prevail on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the pick six sequence:

Prince Will I Am's best days may lie ahead

Following Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Churchill Downs, in which Prince Will I Am was disqualified from second and placed 10th for interference, owner Susie Atkins of Casa Farms would have a right to feel disgusted.

Losing $90,000 in earnings, the purse differential between second and 10th-place, she could feel anger toward her jockey, Javier Castellano, who the stewards suspended six days for careless riding aboard Prince Will I Am. Or she could feel dismay toward the stewards for the disqualification.

Arc winner Workforce to race in 2011

Workforce, the heavy morning-line favorite who was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Turf because of course conditions, will return to race next year at age 4, his connections announced Monday.

Workforce scored victories in the Epsom Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2010, and came to Churchill the hot BC Turf favorite off his Arc win. But after training daily on the Churchill turf from Tuesday through Friday, Workforce was pulled from the race Saturday morning because his connections did not want to race over grass they considered too firm for their horse.
