Rummy's Command returns to form at Mountaineer

Rummy's Command, unsuccessful in his last four starts while racing around two turns, relished the return to his home track and a shorter distance by scoring an 18-1 upset in the slop Tuesday night in the $75,000 Sophomore Sprint Stakes at Mountaineer Racetrack.

It was the first stakes victory not only for the 3-year-old gelding Rummy's Command ($38.40), but also for jockey Olaf Hernandez and trainer Donald Blankenship.

Potential buyer temporarily withdraws license application

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Global Gaming, which holds the rights to buy the operating assets of Lone Star Park from MI Developments, withdrew its application to purchase the track’s racing license during a Texas Racing Commission meeting on Tuesday. Global officials did not give a reason for having the licensing item pulled from the agenda but indicated its intent to pursue the sale.

“They’re really not going into details on why they will submit at a later date, but they are committed to the project and to the horse racing industry in Texas,” said Kym Koch, a spokesperson for Global.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Barry Abrams is going to have to switch from lox and bagels to barramundi and Vegemite. After sending out Unusual Suspect to victory on Saturday in the Grade 1, $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup, Abrams said Unusual Suspect would be heading to Australia to race next year, with designs on the Melbourne Cup and what Abrams views as a more favorable environment to become a potential stallion.

Prevue, Moccasin put juveniles in spotlight

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Talk about a preview of coming attractions. Last fall at this meet, Lookin At Lucky won the Hollywood Futurity and Blind Luck took the Starlet, the biggest races of the season for 2-year-olds at Hollywood Park. Both went on to be division leaders this year.

The Futurity and the Starlet are next month, but some of the horses hoping to take a step toward those important Grade 1 races will be in action this weekend in seven-furlong prep races.

Turfway Park reduces overnight purses

Turfway Park has trimmed overnight purses for the upcoming four months of racing at the Florence, Ky., track as a means of maintaining the integrity of its traditional stakes schedule.

Turfway ran only one stakes at its 16-day fall meet, canceling several other stakes, including the once-prestigious Kentucky Cup series for the first time since its 1994 inaugural. The decision to trim overnight purses was “prudent, given the circumstances,” said the track’s president, Bob Elliston. “It’s important to have a stakes schedule.”

Gomez bruised but no worse, test shows

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Garrett Gomez suffered “bad bruising,” but nothing worse, to his ailing right shoulder, according to results from a magnetic resonance imaging test taken last Friday, said Ron Anderson, agent for the star jockey. Gomez still is in enough pain that he will forgo riding at the balance of the Churchill Downs fall meet and will return to action on Nov. 28, Hollywood Derby day at Hollywood Park.

Charalambous eyes another big win in Kennedy Road

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The 2010 meeting at Woodbine Racetrack already has been a memorable one for trainer Liz Charalambous, who celebrated her first stakes win when Secret Wish upset the $127,000 Algoma on Sept. 6.

But Charalambous is not through yet and will be looking to add another chapter to her history book when she sends out General Brock to do battle in Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Kennedy Road at six furlongs.

General Brock, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old gelding, will be making his stakes debut in the Kennedy Road.
