Pender Harbour gets stakes win in Kingarvie

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Pender Harbour ($21.30) took the long way home en route to his first stakes score in the $128,200 Kingarvie at Woodbine Racetrack Saturday.

Pender Harbour went four wide on the first turn in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds, and eventually commenced a five-wide rally on the far turn under Slade Callaghan. He took dead aim at pacemaker Altius in the stretch, and made the lead nearing the sixteenth pole before drawing clear for a 2 1/4-length tally in 1:45.60.

Jockey critical after Aqueduct spill

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Apprentice jockey Jason Gracia was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with a concussion and broken ribs after being thrown from his mount in Saturday's third race at Aqueduct, according to his agent, Jorge Velasquez.

Meanwhile, fellow rider Jose Bermudez, who was involved in the same spill, was undergoing tests at North Shore Medical Center, complaining of rib soreness, according to New York Racing Association officials.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – In the last start of her training career, Cindy Jones won her first Grade 1 stakes.

Overcoming a four-wide trip under Terry Thompson, No Such Word joined the leaders at the three-eighths pole, then ran away from Awesome Maria in the final three-sixteenths of a mile to win the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths.

Leparoux, Desormeaux suspended for Clark Handicap infractions

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Julien Leparoux and Kent Desormeaux have been suspended three racing days apiece for their roles in the disqualifications of their mounts in the Clark Handicap on Friday at Churchill Downs.

Leparoux finished first aboard Successful Dan in the Grade 1 race, and Desormeaux was fourth on Demarcation. Successful Dan was disqualified to third and Demarcation to last for separate incidents nearing the eighth pole.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Five minutes before the horses loaded into the starting gate for Saturday’s Grade 2 Remsen Stakes, trainer Bill Mott, standing in the Aqueduct paddock, took a deep breath and shrugged his shoulders.

“Cold or nervous?” someone asked.

“Both,” said Mott, the trainer of heavily favored To Honor and Serve.

About seven minutes later, after To Honor and Serve won the $200,000 Remsen, Mott could exhale with some relief, but now he has six months to deal with a case of Derby fever.

Presious Passion will try McKnight again

MIAMI – The weights are out for next Saturday’s Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap, and among the trio of horses at the top of the list under 120 pounds is the multiple Grade 1 winner Presious Passion. But even though trainer Mary Hartmann briefly considered running him in the race, she has opted to take the more conservative and logical route and wait two more weeks for the Grade 3 W.L. McKnight Handicap on Dec. 18.

Southern California riders in for Jockey Challenge

PORTLAND, Ore. – Monday will not simply be another day at the office for Portland Meadows’s leading jockey Joe Crispin.

Crispin will lead a team of fellow Portland Meadows riders – Javier Martinez, Mark Anderson, and Troy Stillwell – in the second Annual XpressBet Jockey Challenge against Team Southern California’s Joel Rosario, Joe Talamo, David Flores, and Martin Pedroza.

Prize money of $20,000 is up for grabs in the four-race series in which jockeys were randomly assigned mounts.

Blind Luck may wait for El Encino

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Blind Luck, the nation’s leading 3-year-old filly with five stakes wins this year, may not make her next start until the $150,000 El Encino Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 16, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Friday.

Second in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5 in her most recent start, Blind Luck worked a half-mile in 49.80 seconds at Hollywood Park on Friday.

Hollendorfer said Blind Luck may be considered for the $250,000 La Brea Stakes over seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Dec. 26, but is more likely for the El Encino.
