ELMONT, N.Y. – The decision by the owners of Unrivaled Belle to bring the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner back for a 5-year-old campaign is only part of the reason trainer Bill Mott probably can’t wait for 2011.
Goldikova, the only horse to win three Breeders’ Cup races, will return to race in 2011, trainer Freddie Head confirmed Monday, saying that if all goes well her season will end with a fourth start in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
“Absolutely she will race again,” Head said. “She took her race very well.”
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mike DePaulo had two of the better nominees for Wednesday’s $125,000 South Ocean Stakes, Bubbles to the Top and Zee Beauty, but he is running only Zee Beauty in the 1 1/16-mile event for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies.
Zee Beauty rallied for fourth when she debuted Aug. 6, and then finished second six weeks later in a slow six-furlong event. Most recently Oct. 16, she showed more speed than usual in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special for Ontario-sired fillies, and won by four lengths in a time that earned her a Beyer Speed Figure of 60.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dryfly was so highly regarded that he was listed as a separate wagering interest in Pool 1of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager in mid-February, closing at 46-1. Unfortunately for his connections and fans, that would be the extent of his Derby possibilities, as Dryfly exited the Feb. 20 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park with a knee chip requiring surgery.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Zenyatta finished second in her final career start Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but she remained first in the hearts of her adoring fans here Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, literally stopping traffic on a public road adjacent to the barn area when motorists realized she was out grazing.
The scene brought a smile to the face of Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, who has allowed unusual access to the mare, both on the road, when Zenyatta raced both here and at Oaklawn Park, and at Zenyatta’s home base at Hollywood Park.
Dakota Phone’s $77.40 upset in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile made him the 14th Breeders’ Cup winner to also race in Northern California.
Wild Again, who won the inaugural Classic in 1984, ran third in a turf race at Bay Meadows in his final start before his Breeders’ Cup upset. Princess Rooney, the 1984 Distaff winner, might have been the first Breeders’ Cup winner to race in Northern California, but she cut her head getting off a van upon her arrival at Golden Gate Fields for a race and had to be scratched.
INGLEWOOD, Calif.- May Day Rose scored an easy win in her stakes debut in Sunday’s $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes at Hollywood Park, leading throughout and winning by a convincing 4 1/4 lengths.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, May Day Rose ($6.60) was never seriously challenged in her first start since beating maidens over 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Sept. 4. The Sharp Cat Stakes was May Day Rose’s first start at 1 1/16 miles.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Strike Oil ran greenly but gamely to win his maiden in style Sunday at Woodbine in the $252,400 Coronation Futurity.
Strike Oil ($30.70) raced at the back of the 11-horse field of 2-year-olds early in the nine-furlong route, and then commenced a wide rally midway on the far turn under Luis Contreras. He overtook Charlie’s the Man inside the sixteenth pole before lugging in, and went on to prevail by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:52.10.
Askbut I Won’ttell emerged from a tight pack and drew clear in the final stages to win the 37th running of the Grade 3, $113,900 Cardinal Handicap on Sunday, when the 2010 Breeders’ Cup weekend at Churchill Downs came to a quiet end.
