Category Killer better suited to sprinting

Rather than complain about the near-misses that come with having won with just 3 of his first 35 starters at the Fair Grounds meet, Tom Amoss is putting a different spin on a period of mild frustration.

“I challenge anybody to match my record for being in the money,” Amoss said with false bravado and a laugh.

Golden Phoenix can end Peery's stakes drought in Gowell

The latest incarnation in the stop-and-start training career of Chuck Peery began in the spring of 2009 in Kentucky, some time after he resettled on the 23-acre farm in Versailles, Ky., that he bought with his wife, Tracy. Originally from the state of Washington, Peery enjoyed his best years in Northern California before relocating.

Early 3-year-old stakes boost Golden Gate meet

For the second year in a row, the Golden Gate Fields winter-spring meeting will begin without a stakes on the card. The $50,000 Silveyville was canceled when only three runners were entered. But with several major 3-year-old stakes coming up early in the meeting, Golden Gate fans and bettors have plenty to look forward to.

Among the highlights of the 104-day meeting, which runs through June 12, are the $100,000 California Oaks on New Year’s Day, the $100,000 California Derby on Jan. 15, and the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 12.

Trainers have plenty of praise for Santa Anita's dirt track

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita’s new main track is getting a trial by water.

With opening day fast approaching, a series of soaking, sometimes vicious storms pounded the area. By Wednesday morning, when entries were being taken for Sunday’s opening-day card, the rainfall had totaled more than 12 inches since last Saturday.

Had this happened a year ago, when the old synthetic track had drainage problems, opening day might very well have been in jeopardy.

“The old stuff, that would have been a disaster,” trainer Bob Baffert said.

Royal Currier outlasts favored Fort Hughes by head in Southampton

Jockey Stewart Elliott turned out to be a better handicapper than the public, who made New York shipper Fort Hughes the 2-5 favorite in Tuesday’s $75,000 Southampton Stakes at Parx Racing. Named on two horses, including the Darley Stable-owned Fort Hughes, Elliott chose to retain the mount on locally based 2-year-old gelding Royal Currier, who was coming off a wire-to-wire victory in an overnight stakes at Belmont Park.

Elliott made the right choice as Royal Currier ($8) held off Fort Hughes by a head in the six-furlong Southampton, an overnight stakes for 2-year-olds.

Bouquet Booth, winner of the Delta Downs Princess, is working toward a start in the Tiffany Lass at Fair Grounds on Jan. 22.

Tuesdays are the quietest workout day of the week at Fair Grounds, but a couple names of note appeared on the Tuesday tab this week.

Bouquet Booth went an easy half-mile in 50.40 seconds, her first workout since she won the Delta Princess on Nov. 20.

“We just gave her a little break, and that’s worked out well,” trainer Steve Margolis said.

Gourmet Dinner's California trip filled with trouble

MIAMI – When trainer Steve Standridge and owner-breeder Bill Terrill made the decision to ship their Delta Jackpot winner Gourmet Dinner across country from his home base at Calder Race Course here to Hollywood Park for last Saturday’s CashCall Futurity, they didn’t expect the bumps in the road they would encounter prior to and during the running of the final Grade 1 race for 2-year-olds in 2010.
