Dubai Dancer, winner of last month’s Witches Brew at Monmouth, jumps in class for the Grade 1 Gazelle.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though Dubai Dancer had just finished seventh in her debut over Aqueduct’s inner track last January – racing somewhat erratically throughout – jockey Richard Migliore told trainer Kiaran McLaughlin he thought the filly was capable of winning a graded stakes race.

Seven months later, after guiding her to a seven-length maiden win at Saratoga, jockey Ramon Dominguez told McLaughlin that Migliore might have been selling the filly a little short.

Moreno readies for move into journeyman ranks

Michael Burns
Omar Moreno won the Sovereign Award for apprentice jockey last year and is going for a second Sovereign and perhaps an Eclipse Award this year.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Wednesday marked the final day of jockey Omar Moreno’s apprenticeship, and he had five mounts on the nine-race program here at Woodbine Racetrack. But Moreno’s night ended early as he was suffering from sinusitis and had to book off after his first two rides.

The condition had worsened by Thursday morning, and although Moreno breezed a horse in the morning and wanted to ride, he took the advice of his agent, former jockey Jack Lauzon, and went home to bed.

“He looked terrible,” said Lauzon. “His face was all swollen, right across.”

The 6-5 favorite under regular rider Julian Pimentel, Ben’s Cat ($4.40) held off a late rally by longshot Fonda Ronda to prevail by a half-length, covering one mile in 1:39.08..
