J P's Gusto must prove himself at CashCall distance

Benoit & Associates
J P's Gusto, with Patrick Valenzuela Up, wins the Del Mar Futurity.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – For most of the owners and trainer chasing Saturday’s $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park, the focus of the race is the lucrative prize. A win or placing in the Grade 1 race would greatly help the chances of gaining a berth in the Kentucky Derby in May, a field determined by graded stakes earnings.

Joinem could offer boost for Carroll

Joinem, a 3-year-old Johar gelding, won his career debut last June at Churchill Downs by more than 10 lengths, and he has finished first or second in all four of his starts to date. Joinem was one of 10 horses entered in the featured eighth race Thursday at Fair Grounds, and he looks like a horse with a decent future, but forgive trainer David Carroll for being far more wrapped up in the present.

Morey benefits from client's advice

ALBANY, Calif. – Trainer Billy Morey will be paying close attention to one of his clients, Don Brauer, from now on.

Brauer, a part owner in Sir Al, who has won more than $100,000 since joining Morey’s barn 16 months ago, has tipped Morey about several horses.

Morey has purchased two: Hudson Landing, winner of last spring’s Alcatraz Stakes, and Positive Response, who scored an impressive wire-to-wire victory in Saturday’s Gold Rush Stakes.

“He shoots horses at me from time to time,” said Morey. “These are the only two we both really liked.”

Parx cancels Tuesday card after track freezes

Parx Racing canceled its 10-race Tuesday program because of track conditions and wind-chill conditions, according to Sal Sinatra, racing secretary at the Bensalem, Pa., track.

“The track was wet yesterday and froze up overnight,” Sinatra said. “We actually might’ve been okay by the first race (12:25 p.m. Eastern), but another factor was that the wind chill is in the single digits. We just didn’t want to take any chances, so we called off the races early enough to give everybody the notice they need.”

Adam Coliganese/NYRA

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Peppi Knows, who shipped in to upset the Whirlaway Stakes here last winter for Penn National-based trainer Tim Kreiser, returns to the scene of his most lucrative payday in Wednesday’s $60,000 Cosmic Bob overnight stakes at a mile and 70 yards.
