J P’s Gusto, Elite Alex work at Oaklawn for Southwest

Elite Alex was scratched from last weekend's Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn in favor of Saturday's Louisiana Derby.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – J P’s Gusto geared up for a start in the Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 21, when he breezed six furlongs in hand in 1:15.60 on Monday morning. It was his first local work since arriving in town Wednesday. He went just after 7 a.m. Central.

J P’s Gusto had been based in Southern California with trainer David Hofmans, but last week he was transferred to the care of Oaklawn-based trainer Joe Petalino. A Grade 1 winner of more than $500,000, he is a long-term candidate for the Arkansas Derby on April 16.

Always a Princess beats Blind Luck again in La Canada

ARCADIA, Calif. - A slow pace set by a filly in peak form gave Always a Princess her second consecutive stakes win in Sunday’s $150,000 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita.

Similar to her front-running win in the Grade 2 El Encino Stakes on Jan. 16, Always a Princess’s victory in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes for 4-year-old fillies came at the expense of Blind Luck, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2010, who could only manage second.

Quiet Again proves uncatchable in Curribot

Quiet Again took the lead at the start of the $50,000 Curribot at Sunland Park on Sunday and never relinquished it to win the 1 1/16-mile race by a length over favorite Red Lead. It was another half-length back in third to Imco Spirit.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.-  Leading trainer Randy Morse can do no wrong this meet at Oaklawn Park. His stable’s top older horse, Kate’s Main Man, held off a furious rally by Win Willy  in  the $100,000 Essex Handicap on Sunday. Kate’s Main Man won by three-quarters of a length, while Win Willy finished second by a length over Stachys.

Jockeys avoid serious injury in four-horse spill at Big A

Four jockeys thrown from their mounts in Sunday's ninth race at Aqueduct all appeared to escape serious injury.

Jockeys Brian Pedroza and Charlie Amaro were both taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where X-rays taken on both riders were negative, according to Steve Rushing, agent for Pedroza. Rushing also represents Ramon Dominguez, who went to the hospital after the races and spoke with Rushing.

Meanwhile, jockeys Nazario Alvarado and Abel Lezcano were able to walk away from the spill and did not have to go to the hospital.

Jaycito may use San Vicente as audition for San Felipe

Jaycito is expected to make his 3-year-old debut in the $150,000 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 20.

The $150,000 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita next Sunday could produce a few starters for the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 12.

The Grade 2 San Vicente, run over seven furlongs, is expected to feature Jaycito, the winner of the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes last fall who has not started since finishing a troubled sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs in November.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Anthony’s Cross, the winner of the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday, may not start again until the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9, trainer Eoin Harty said on Sunday.

Plans for Tapizar, who finished fifth as the 1-5 favorite in the Lewis, have not been finalized, trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Chamberlain Bridge tunes up nicely for Dubai by taking Rail Splitter

Chamberlain Bridge, making his first start since winning the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, charges home in the Rail Splitter.

Chamberlain Bridge moved closer to a trip to Dubai on Saturday night, when he won his first start since taking the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint in the $75,000 Rail Splitter at Sam Houston Race Park.

The five-furlong turf race served as his prep for the Group 2, $1 million Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Race Course on March 26.
