Twirling Candy breezes in preparation for Strub

Twirling Candy is being pointed to the Feb. 5 Strub Stakes at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif.-Twirling Candy, who set a seven-furlong track record in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Santa Anita on Sunday.

The exercise, in company with the claimer Hammurabi, who was given the same time and the designation breezing, was the first work for Twirling Candy since the Malibu. Trainer John Sadler said that Twirling Candy missed four or five days of training in early January because of a bruised foot.

Russell Baze injures neck in spill at Golden Gate Fields

ALBANY, Calif. – X-rays were negative after Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze injured his neck when dumped by Joffe’s Run prior to the running of the first race at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Baze was taken to Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, but the X-rays were clean. His neck was sprained and bruised, but he is listed as day-to-day and may be able to ride Sunday.

ARCADIA, Calif.-The television screen at a certain race and sports book in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, are apparently not of the highest quality.

This was vital on Saturday afternoon for trainer Bob Baffert, who was vacationing at the Pacific Ocean resort with family and friends, but ducked into such an establishment to watch a simulcast of the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes at Santa Anita.

Shorter distance helps Shamrock Girl take La Senora

Shamrock Girl delivered as the favorite in a full field of 12 at Sunland Park on Saturday, when she was up for a one-length win the $125,000 La Senora. Squall Wilbud finished second in the six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third to Go to Gold.

Shamrock Girl ($4.60) raced in midpack in the early stages, then went on to cover six furlongs on a track rated fast in 1:10.91. Agapito Delgadillo was aboard for owner-trainer David Wolochuk.

Chief Jay wakes up returning to dirt sprint in John Jackson Memorial

One start after a failed turf experiment, Chief Jay returned to what he does best, running short on dirt, and upset the $60,000 John E. Jackson Memorial Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds.

Chief Jay outkicked pace-pressing favorite My Star Runner and was able to hold off Flashy Wise Cat to win the Jackson by a neck. The winner, a 6-year-old son of Ile St. Louis, is trained by Sam Breaux for owner Sara Citron.

All Saint triggers $24,000 superfecta in Cotton Fitzsimmons


All Saint hadn’t hit the board in his first three grass starts, but that apparently didn’t matter to the rejuvenated 5-year-old as he dominated Saturday’s $35,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile on the turf, leading home a parade of longshots at Turf Paradise.

All Saint, owned by Pascual Gamez and trained by Wilton Whitehouse, was coming off a big front-running win in the Hank Mills Sr. Handicap at a mile on the main track here Dec. 18 and this was basically a repeat of that.
