Max Silverhammer finished clear of a late run by Wealth to Me to post his first stakes victory Saturday night in the $50,000 Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Park.
With John McKee aboard, Max Silverhammer got a good stalking trip before surging up the rail and opening a sizable lead after straightening for home in the one-mile race. Wealth to Me rallied strongly from last in a field of eight but was three-quarters of a length shy on the wire.

On a day when the main track produced quick times under wet-fast conditions, Klassy Saint ($3.80) stalked pacesetter Cabo San Lucas, took the lead in the final furlong and pulled away to win by 4 1/4 lengths. Cabo San Lucas set fractions of 21.34 and 44.45 seconds, and held second in the field of seven.

After winning two Grade 1 stakes last year racing near the lead, Smiling Tiger did the opposite in the $150,00 San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita. He overcame a stumble shortly after the start to win the seven-furlong race by a nose over Captain Cherokee, closing from well off the pace. Smiling Tiger ($4.80) ran seven furlongs in 1:20.30.

La Sorpresa won by 3 3/4 lengths over Desert Tap, while Cali Baby finished another neck back in third as both the odds-on favorite and the 125-pound highweight.
