Asmussen sends out an on-his-toes Epicenter for Travers work

Barbara D. Livingston
Epicenter, who won the Jim Dandy at Saratoga, tries to get his first Grade 1 win in the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 27.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Monday marked only nine days since Epicenter won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, but the 3-year-old colt seems eager to get to his next engagement, the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 27.

Sensing how sharp Epicenter has been the last week, trainer Steve Asmussen on Monday gave him a five-furlong workout that the 3-year-old did by himself in 1:01.70. He got his final quarter in 24.81 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.41.

It was a bit atypical for an Asmussen runner to do that much so close to his last race.

Emily Shields
Jockey Victor Esoinoza was fined $1,500 for using his whip more than six times during Express Train's head victory in the Santa Anita Handicap.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The days of chasing leading rider trophies are long gone for Hall of Fame rider Victor Espinoza. The mementoes that accompany big-race wins provide a suitable substitute.

Espinoza, 50, has won seven stakes this year, surpassing the six stakes wins he had in 2021. He has expectations for greater success before the end of the Del Mar meeting on Sept. 11, and beyond.

“I want to keep it going and win a few more,” Espinoza said on the backstretch on Sunday morning between workers.

Some trainers feel Saratoga's main track rail too deep

Barbara D. Livingston
Todd Pletcher has spent the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs every year since 1999. He will be running two horses in Saturday's Arkansas Derby, which he plans to watch from Florida.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Some horsemen have expressed concern with Saratoga’s main track, specifically that the inside is too deep in the stretch, but is not that way on the backside.

The issue came to light Saturday morning when a horse trained by Robert Falcone Jr. fell down near the finish line while galloping out following a workout. Additionally, trainer Todd Pletcher, after watching horses work early Saturday morning, reached out to Glen Kozak, NYRA’s senior vice president/operations and capital projects, to express some concern about the inside.

Mike Maker wins his 3,000th race - twice

Barbara Livingston
Mike Maker's 3,000th win came when Palatial Times won the fifth race at Ellis Park on Friday. Maker watched the race on his phone in the Saratoga paddock.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Mike Maker won his 3,000th career race on Friday - twice.

At Saratoga, Maker thought he had reached that milestone when Laugh and Play won race 2, a $50,000 claimer. However, after a jockey’s objection from Javier Castellano aboard the runner-up, Quaria Thunder, the Saratoga stewards disqualified Laugh and Play from first and placed her second, though they had left similar incidents earlier in the week alone.

Maker was one of many who disagreed with the call.
