Met Mile at Belmont a possibility for Rodman

Rodman, who returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since December 2009 on Thursday with a 3 1/2-length score in the Irish Tower Stakes at Aqueduct, could be pointed to the Grade 1, $500,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont on May 30, trainer Mike Hushion said Friday.

Rodman, a 6-year-old son of Malibu Moon, went gate to wire under Ramon Dominguez running fractions of 24.19 seconds, 47.39, and 1:10.79 for six furlongs before completing the mile in 1:34.71 while under a hand ride. He earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

Aqueduct: Samyn wins first race back since snowblower accident

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Jean Luc-Samyn, riding for the first time since losing parts of two fingers in a snowblower accident in February, wins his first race back on Friday at Aqueduct.

Jockey Jean Luc-Samyn rode his 2,612th career winner Friday at Aqueduct. It may go down as one of his most memorable victories.

The ride on Belongs to Sheila in a $15,000 claiming race was Samyn’s first since he lost two fingers on his right hand in a snow blower accident at his home on Feb. 21. After saving ground early, Samyn guided Belongs to Sheila widest of all in the stretch and went to his left-handed stick to get the 4-year-old colt up by a neck at the wire. Belongs to Sheila returned $14.

Preakness a possibility for Mr. Commons

Mr. Commons, third in the Santa Anita Derby on April 9, may start in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 21, trainer John Shirreffs said.

Mr. Commons does not have sufficient graded stakes earnings to secure a berth in the Kentucky Derby field on May 7 at this point, leaving Shirreffs to point for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

“There are a lot of options for a promising 3-year-olds,” Shirreffs said. He described the Preakness as “possible.”

Santa Anita: San Juan Capistrano offers prestige for Haimish Hy

ARCADIA, Calif. – Haimish Hy ended his 2010 season with a win at the highest level, the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby last November. So far this year, he has not continued that level of success, losing his first three starts.

A start in a Grade 1 may be in Haimish Hy’s future this spring or summer, but he can reach another career milestone in Sunday’s $150,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita. The historic race is run over about 1 3/4 miles on turf, the longest graded stakes in California and one that carries considerable prestige on the circuit.

Keeneland: Beaumont no lock for Turbulent Descent

Benoit & Associates
Tell a Kelly, with Alonso Quinonez up, Darley Debutante

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On trainer intent alone, Turbulent Descent would seem to have an edge on her former California colleague and fellow Grade 1 winner, Tell a Kelly, when the Beaumont Stakes is run Sunday at Keeneland.

Mike Puype has been eyeing the Grade 2, $150,000 Beaumont for the recently active Turbulent Descent ever since he decided the 1 1/8-mile Kentucky Oaks is beyond her scope. In the meantime, Chad Brown is just getting to know Tell a Kelly and is calling the Beaumont “a good starting point” for the filly to return from a layoff of more than four months.
