SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Giant Oak and Ice Box, a pair of late-runners who’ll be looking for a lively pace next weekend in the Grade 1 Woodward, were a contrast in styles in their final tune-ups for the race Saturday.
Giant Oak, working over the main track, breezed an easy five furlongs in 1:02.56, while Ice Box shared the morning’s bullet half-mile drill of 48 seconds across Union Avenue at the Oklahoma training track.
ERIE, Pa. - Willie Martinez, who recorded his 3,000th career win on Aug. 12, will be sidelined after being injured in an accident following Friday's third race at Presque Isle Downs. According to his agent, Doug Davis, Martinez had a puncture in one of his lungs and several broken ribs.
"They kept him overnight for observation, because of the puncture," Davis said Saturday by phone from the rider's bedside at Erie's UPMC Hamot. "But he's talking and will be walking away from this, probably today. He can sit up and move his head, his hands and his legs."

Elliott Walden, president of WinStar Farm, the owner of Sidney’s Candy, said Saturday he plans to talk to trainer Todd Pletcher on Sunday about which race to run Sidney’s Candy in. Walden said that race will most likely be next Saturday here in either the $750,000 Woodward at 1 1/8 miles or the $250,000 Forego at seven furlongs.
Golden Stripe couldn’t quite duplicate her 2010 effort in the Distaff, when she won the one-mile stakes for Manitoba-bred fillies and mares by 18 1/4 lengths.
On Friday night, at Assiniboia Downs, Golden Stripe had to settle for a 15 1/4-length victory in the $50,000 Distaff as she led all the way under jockey David Lopez.
Golden Stripe, a 5-year-old who races for his breeder, K-5 Stable, and trainer Shelley Brown, picked up $30,600 to bring her career earnings close to the $200,000 mark.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - In anticipation of Hurricane Irene, the New York Racing Association announced Saturday that there will be no simulcasting at either Aqueduct or Belmont Park on Sunday.
Further, NYRA officials said a decision on whether to run Sunday’s 11-race card at Saratoga will be made by the conclusion of Saturday’s card.
Saratoga isn’t expected to feel the effects of Hurricane Irene until Sunday. Initial forecasts call for more than two inches of rain on Sunday and high winds.
