Charles Town: Rapid Redux bids for 17th straight victory

Rapid Redux continues his quest towards North American Thoroughbred racing’s all-time record for consecutive victories when he bids for his 17th straight in a $5,000 starter allowance on Friday night’s card at Charles Town.

He is part of a eight-horse field scheduled to go 1 1/16 miles in the eighth race, worth $20,000. Ten were entered, but Historically, Working Man Blues, and Derwins Prospector were scratched Friday morning. Smiling Jordan drew in off the also-eligible list.

Fairplex: Pick six carryover, twilight racing add spice to Wednesday card

POMONA, Calif. – Times are changing at Fairplex Park, and not just post time.

The first twilight card at the Los Angeles County Fair will be run Wednesday with a pick six carryover of $39,460 on a nine-race program that begins at 4 p.m. Pacific and will finish under the lights.

Gio Ponti to pass Woodbine Mile

Gio Ponti will skip Sunday's Woodbine Mile and await the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Christophe Clement said Monday that Gio Ponti would pass on Sunday’s Woodbine Mile and stick to the original schedule of the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 8 and the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 5.

Clement had said that he was thinking of squeezing the Woodbine Mile in for Gio Ponti, the three-time Eclipse Award winner, but ultimately he and owner Shane Ryan decided against it.

Compliance Officer made it 4 for 4 off the claim for Brown and owner Thomas LaMarca on Sunday when he rolled to a 3 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Ashley T. Cole Handicap. Claimed for $25,000 in May, Compliance Officer won two allowance races and the West Point at Saratoga prior to Sunday’s Cole victory.

Fairplex: Rough riding triggers tempers of Pedroza, Santiago-Reyes

POMONA, Calif. – There was no hiding the acrimony between jockeys Martin Pedroza and Christian Santiago-Reyes, who ended opening week at Fairplex Park on Sunday tied in the standings at six wins each. Hostility between the riders was evident in an exchange following the $50,000 Jim Kostoff Stakes on Sunday when Pedroza accused Santiago-Reyes of careless riding into the first turn.

Belmont Park: Awesome Feather could be ready to race in a month

ELMONT, N.Y. – Awesome Feather, last year’s champion 2-year-old filly who has not raced yet this year, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.98 over Belmont Park’s main track Monday morning. It was her third breeze since returning to the work tab after a two-month hiatus.

“Awesome Feather is doing really well, we’re taking it week to week with her,” trainer Chad Brown said. “She went nice and smooth and well within herself.”

Woodbine Mile field taking shape; Courageous Cat the likely favorite

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Courageous Cat, the probable favorite for the Woodbine Mile, had his final major tune-up at Saratoga on Sunday morning, breezing five furlongs on the training turf course in 59.95 seconds.

“He worked well,” trainer Bill Mott said. “He was off easy and finished up well.”

Courageous Cat heads a prospective field of 11 or 12 for the Woodbine Mile, a turf race for 3-year-olds and up that offers Grade 1 status and a purse of $1 million.
