ELMONT, N.Y. – After watching Western Aristocrat win 3 of 6 starts in Europe, trainer Jeremy Noseda told owner Tom Ludt he felt the horse would “blossom in America.”
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Holiday for Kitten failed in her international venture to Royal Ascot in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer, finishing 13th, but on Polytrack at Keeneland this year, she remains perfect.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Blue Heart ($10.80) held off lukewarm favorite Spirited Miss to take the $232,600 Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.
Daddy’s Jewel set a quick pace in the 1 1/16-mile route for 2-year-old fillies as Blue Heart raced in a four-wide stalking position under Joe Bravo.
Trainer Larry Jones was correct with his hunch that 2-year-old colt Mr. Bowling wanted to run farther than six furlongs. Stretched out around two turns after winning his maiden in a sprint, Mr. Bowling cruised to a 7 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s $84,000 Dover Stakes at Delaware Park.
The 6-year-old gelding I’m Sure had a habit of settling for second place when he ran on turf. Prior to Saturday, I’m Sure had only one win, but five runner-up finishes among his 11 starts on grass.
I’m Sure didn’t act like a horse who’s reluctant to win in the $76,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap, however. Ridden by Sam Bermudez,
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The last furlong got ’em. Havelock, in off a subpar route race on the Turfway synthetic, flew past the opposition with a ferocious stretch kick Saturday to post a one-length triumph in the 15th running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Woodford Stakes for turf sprinters.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Tapizar won the battle of come-backing stakes winners Saturday, taking the lead soon after the start under Corey Nakatani and cruising to a 2 1/4-length victory in a second-level allowance race at Belmont Park.
Uptowncharlybrown, unraced since the 2010 Belmont Stakes, chased Tapizar most of the trip and finished second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Boys At Tosconova, who was making his first start since running second in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Keeping Camp Victory moving toward a start in the Breeders’ Cup next month is trainer Mike Mitchell’s goal in Monday’s $100,000 Morvich Stakes at Santa Anita.
“I think it’s a real good prep race for whatever we do at the Breeders’ Cup, if we’re that good,” Mitchell said.
The possible races for Camp Victory at Churchill Downs include the BC Turf Sprint, the Sprint, or the Dirt Mile.
“We need a good performance to be thinking about those races,” Mitchell said.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Briefly in late August, trainer A.C. Avila considered giving the 3-year-old Great Warrior his stakes debut in the $1 million Pacific Classic against older horses.
Great Warrior was entered in the Pacific Classic, but did not start. Avila later decided that staying in the 3-year-old division had more appeal.
The plan has worked. Great Warrior has thrived in the last six weeks. After finishing second by a nose in the El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar on Sept. 2, Great Warrior rebounded to score a four-length win in the Pomona Derby at Fairplex Park on Sept. 24.
